at least on their show they were doing it for practical filming reasons, but it popularised it and it's SO obnoxious.
@EdCates someone on here posted a train carriage sign a while back (my perception of time sucks so it could've been 3 months or 3 years ago, idk) that warned people they would be removed from the train for talking on their phone like that. needs to be policy everywhere on public transport.

@EdCates I have hearing aids, which *almost* work like a bluetooth headset: I have to hold the phone within about half a meter of my mouth, but I can speak in a conversational tone, and nobody can hear the other end of the conversation, so in the supermarket it generally looks like I'm clutching a holy object to my chest and talking to Jesus about whether we need eggs.
When mobile phones were still uncommon, I overheard someone in the grocery store calling their significant other to ask whether they should get green or red grapes. What I didn't say was "just make an executive decision and live with the consequences."
It's been all downhill from there. -

The General PublicThat's one of the reasons I don't call or send audio messages anymore. You don't know who's around, your private conversation is now blasted around.
There's artists on social media whose entire thing is to get private audios from people (rarely the senders of such audios) and recreate the conversation as a cartoon. Very funny but also a privacy nightmare. -

The General Public@EdCates The funniest ones are those who turn the speaker down really low because otherwise everyone could hear them. And then they have to hold the bottom of the phone to their ear so they can hear anything. And when they want to say something again, they hold the phone up to their mouth like a sandwich. Every time, I want to shake them and explain that the phone has its own speaker for this discreet way of talking on the phone, which is so quiet that no one else can hear anything, and conveniently, it's on the other side of the phone so you don't have to keep moving the phone back and forth between your mouth and ear. It's as if the inventors of the telephone had something in mind when they designed it.

A woman holding phone looked weird at me and shout at me "how I dare to be so rude". I replied to her that speakerphone call in public transport is ruder...
She went red, ended call and dropped at the next stop.

The General Public@EdCates I seriously want to know why people do this. Like why actually? They know they're in public. They know they're blasting their conversation for everyone and everyone can hear what should be private. They know also the other person has to listen to everything because the mic is boosted as much as the speaker is. Yet they do it anyway.
What is going on in their brains?
Are these people actually human or are they, in fact, aliens in disguise who don't realize that human society is different from society on Garkon 8?

The General PublicMany moons ago, there was in a train restaurant car this legal attorney, who kept on making phone calls in those public premises. No speaker, but his own part was loud.
At one stage he was talking to his client. It was about some long-standing legal dispute, and the attorney was not at all optimistic about their success. But his plan was for them two to go see the other part one more time that same day and make one Hail Mary pass kind final threatening bluff. If this would not make it, they would bow out from the matter.
Names etc. were mentioned. Did I say it all was very loud? You could not help hearing and being disturbed.
After several decades, I still regret I didn’t go to the next railcar, find out the other part’s phone number and give him a call.
