Hi!

Hi! I’m new here. I’ve tried Mastodon a couple times but maybe third time’s the charm! I have become increasingly disillusioned by mainstream social media and I’m searching for ways to connect with other people outside of an algorithm.
I teach high school English and I read a lot. Currently at book 92 of a read around the world project. I was a teen in the 90s and still trying to keep my grunge phase alive. I love art and film too.
Hope to meet some likeminded people!
@imaginaryuncle Welcome! I boosted your post for more visibility.

@bemmesr I see! Thank you. I’ll make sure to do that.

Well, I just love it here; perhaps third time will be the charm as you say - I certainly hope so

@imaginaryuncle my two cents on how Mastodon became fun for me...
Once I started talking to strangers (i.e. being comfortable jumping into conversations with people I hadn't interacted with before), it started being super fun. People here have generally been super nice and interesting, and for the few who aren't, or who push my buttons one too many times, the controls for what I see are amazing.
So I guess what I'm saying is, talk to people, and if they suck, feel free to block a bitch.

@alisynthesis @imaginaryuncle
Also pay attention to hashtags. Following hashtags is a great way to discover new friends with common interests and see posts on a topic from people you don't follow. -

@imaginaryuncle Welcome back to Mastodon! I know someone who was on every social media platform available, and she said Mastodon was ‘so boring.’ Well, Mastodon runs with no algorithm, so you have to be proactive and choose to follow hashtags and people who share your interests. Thus, her feed was 'so boring' bc she did not understand that she had to create her own excitement. I hope this third time around works out for you.
-
@2something hi! Are you a teacher too?
@imaginaryuncle@masto.nu Yup, math!

@imaginaryuncle Hi Liz! I’m working as an auditor and love to listen to music, currently prefer dub and reggae - and some thrash metal, shouldn’t be boring…
I was a teen/teen in the 80s, still trying to keep my punk/ska phase alive and, as a boomer, love my analog life but enjoy exchanging opinions in the fediverse, too.
By the way, I’m not a native English speaker, so I beg your pardon for all the mistakes you’ll find in my posts

@imaginaryuncle Hi Liz! I like to track my reading via Bookwyrm - and since that project is federated via ActivityPub, you could follow Bookwyrm users via your Mastodon accounts. (Or create your own Bookwyrm account, of course.) The tricky bit would be to find Bookwyrm users that are interesting for you.
(My apologies if you already know all of that.)

Yes! And then pay compliments or ask people questions about their posts. Liking is cool, but conversation is what makes this place go.
@killick @eelcoa @imaginaryuncle
Yes! The place is still small enough that replies like "Hey, nice picture. Would love to see more like it" can have an effect.

@Immy hello! my favourite film of all time is The Shining. I’m a bit of a horror buff. Honestly I like so many movies that even The Shining is a qualified choice. What’s your favourite?
@imaginaryuncle Ooooh, the Shining is a good choice! I really like that one, among other Kubrick films.
Personally my favourite film is Stalker, I find it unbelivably interesting in concept and execution. Tarkovsky's other films are excellent too.

@imaginaryuncle
Welcome! I hope you find what you're looking for this time. It took me 3 times. This last time I hung around for longer and tried out searching different words and hashtags to find a few people to follow. The feed from them allowed me to see people on their feeds, some of which I followed; and there...I was off to the races! -
@cmyrland that’s brave. I’m still finding it hard to delete FB and IG. Everyone I know is on there so I’ll just lose touch with everyone if I delete them. So annoying. I also tried Bluesky and it did not click for me either. So far I’m having an amazing start here! Just hope it lasts.
Remember, you can get a direct link to any post, an "http" one that people can open in their browsers. (How to get it depends on what app you're using. For me it's on the posts "..." menu.)
I'll send them, (usually pictures of owls), to friends who aren't on Mastodon. I consider it part of a long-term strategy to get them over here.

@alisynthesis great advice! And a really good reminder for someone who’s an introvert too! Thanks!
@imaginaryuncle no doubt! I didn't really use other social media before this either, so it felt super weird to me to just start talking to random people online. But usually fun!

@imaginaryuncle Welcome! I'm also an ex-other social media person. In my experience there's much more wheat and almost no chaff here. Hope you enjoy it!

welcome!
I find a lot of people through just following hashtags. Oh and I also make art and repost art stuff and interesting things...
