    @anneroth @cavallette

    So set up an AlterNIC. It's been done before.

    Because even when the problem isn't DNS, it's ALWAYS DNS!

    @barbra @anneroth @cavallette An alternate DNS root only helps to the extent that anyone uses it. Since few people use those, it's unlikely to help much. And the challenges are far wider than just losing DNS names: A/I will lose bank accounts, hosting space, and most other services provided by businesses at risk from US secondary sanctions on those doing business with A/I.

      @djsumdog @cavallette @anneroth The US declaration of A/I as a terrorist group puts secondary sanctions on those companies that do business with them, from selling them DNS names to providing server space, network hookups, and bank accounts. Many companies won't want to risk those sanctions and will end their relationships.

      @david42 @djsumdog @cavallette @anneroth The team at @thenextweb has more info on how that is working in practice & how designating a group as a terrorist organization with no evidence essentially functions as a ban on free speech: https://thenextweb.com/news/autistici-inventati-shutdown-us-terrorist-designation

      The exact numbers of blogs, mailboxes, etc may vary, but if a government does it & other governments, banks, domain registrars, etc. cooperate, that incentivizes using it to go after political opponents (which is authoritarian, by definition)

          Huh, but Rose City Antifa is a terrorist organization. They're evil spoiled children who've destroyed so much. But, so has the State of Israel. I guess it just matters how powerful your terrorist organization is.

          These people seem incompetent though, and some of the people they support do seem to have committed pretty serious crimes. PirateBay, Cock.li and Kiwifarms are groups that have had to fight tooth and nail to stay alive and have learned how to route around censorship.

          It seems like the leaders of this group might have just been tired of dealing with what they knew had gotten out of hand, and just pulled the plug seeing this as a 'get out of jail free' card.

          HN comments at the bottom are interesting:

            @djsumdog@djsumdog.com @joecardillo@federate.social @cavallette@mastodon.bida.im @david42@mastodon.online @anneroth@systemli.social it is in fact VERY easy to not appeal to domestic terrorists regardless of political affiliation and I am not entirely sure why it is so hard to disown these people. they dug their grave really deep.

                      Well, I'm Canadian, and I don't know anyone who supports the Orange Shitgibbon.

                      They don't like that we removed their booze from sale, but even if we put it back on shelves it wouldn't sell any more. MAGA farmers in the US are big Trump supporters - so not buying any food from the USA works for me. I will never set foot in the US again. ever.

                      It's going to take my generation dying off to even start to undo the distrust they engendered. The US will probably dissolve into civil war before that happens.

                            @barbra @anneroth @cavallette Okay yes, if say the EU added an Alt DNS root that coordinated with ICANN to not overlap on top level domain names, and much of Europe if not the world started using it, then yes, that would work. But A/I couldn't've introduced their own alt DNS root after Aug 26 and had that gotten enough uptake to save them.

                            But the precedent here is that once A/I had names on this hypothetical alt root, the US could've declared the org running the alt root terrorists. & Repeat.

                              Who cares if domain names overlap?

                              A/I could have just asked people to enter their server's ipv6 address into their hosts file. And if you're going to do that, they could have self-hosted their own servers. It's not that expensive. Or that hard.

                              As word got out, more people could do it. Then people could have posted clickable links to the ipv6 address all over the place - no need for everyone to edit their own hosts file.

                              I was doing this 30 years ago so I could stream my music collection at the office over a crappy 1 mbps cable modem link - multiple connections worked fine.

                                    @eclinton @anneroth @cavallette what "bold claim". Trump decided a non existent label is a terrorist organization, and by definition anyone who dislikes his policies is Antifa and then proceeded to make it impossible for a non-US entity to operate. I guess we are lucky he didn't follow it up with an illegal airstrike or kidnap the president of another sovereign nation.

                                        I was doing this 30 years ago so I could stream my music collection at the office over a crappy 1 mbps cable modem link - multiple connections worked fine.

                                        you've moved the problem to IANA instead of ICANN

                                        how to get so many ipv6 addresses? who controls that, its still a bullshit central authority.

                                          @Li @david42 @anneroth @cavallette

                                          Every time your modem connects to an isp, your isp assigns your modem an ipv6 address from its allottment. The modem will reconnect after a power failure or reboot, so you might not get the same address again.

                                          Not really a problem if you also have a server at a hosting facility, since you can host a link there, and update it when your local ip changes, same as a dynamic dns service.

                                          These are solved problems, have been for decades.

                                          No need to involve either IANA or ICANN. You're operating independent of both of them.

                                          I'm really surprised that nobody connected with the affected organisation didn't try this. They had a whole month.

                                          My guess is they don't have any old farts who were doing these things to host web servers from home way back when.

                                          It solves some other problems too - like space for videos. I could host 10s of terabytes of video at home, and there's no monthly storage fee. On a hosting account that gets crazy expensive.
