    My favourite paintings, No.12

Théodore Géricault. The Raft of the Medusa (1818/19)

This painting was the peak of Théodore Géricault's relatively short career; its a massive painting depicting a political scandal centred on political appointments to the French Navy & the abandonment of shipwrecked sailors. Its often discussed (from Géricault's work from real cadavers to its political impact), but in the end its just a breathtaking & compellingly emotive painting!
