Hey, my first post here on Mastodon!

An AltText description of your video would make many of us more open to boosting and extending your reach here.
Just checked, the video did have an AltText description

Perhaps now, or perhaps it’s the client. I watched it in the official app and it didn’t provide one.
I can’t see it in the inset in the browser view of your post either.
Perhaps @FediTips can help us sort this out.

Hey, my first post here on Mastodon! Allow me to introduce myself! I am a hobbyist LEGO stop motion animator and aspiring storyteller! I like good stories focused on original concept as well as great stories around already established franchises (Sonic, etc.).
I hope to gain some traction on this new platform, and some new attention and feedback on my work as a whole!

There are a number of writers who follow various writing hashtags such as #pennedpossibilities #scribesandmakers #wordweavers etc. I'm sure you can find some great inspiration by following those hashtags. Also while not common, there are occasional calls for collaboration from various artists on here, especially in the areas animation and stop-motion photography.

It works in my web client but you need to hover the mouse over it, there's no "alt" button.
The alt text is definitely there, so if it's not displaying properly I think this is a software issue?

@nikatjef ok, I’ll happily jot those down in my notes! Man, Mastodon is such a good place, glad I came here! A friend on Discord recommended me here, no other way I could have come across it! Thanks for the tips

@FediTips hmm, good to know! Thanks for mentioning this, I was worried I did something wrong

Just noticed you're new here, welcome!
Love the stop-motion, really characterful gestures by the characters, nice!

I still can’t get it to come up either in the official Mastodon client app or in DDG as a browser view on mobile.
@DangerousSafe, I appreciate your good humour about this. I should have added my own Welcome! earlier in our exchanges. I’m personally hoping that we’ll see some Star Trek LEGO vids from you.
I still would like to suggest that if your AltText isn’t viewable on the highly used clients for mobile, then it might be best to find an alternative way to include it.
I’m genuinely curious if anyone is able to see the AltText with a mobile client, and if so, which one(s). This may be something that could/should be flagged to developers.

There is nothing @DangerousSafe can do about this because they've already added the alt text.
If you're not able to see the alt text, there must be some kind of software problem on the clients you are using, and it's the developers you need to contact.

My question is whether there is an alternative protocol that @DangerousSafe could use to add the video that wouldn’t run into this issue.
I see ALT and GIF tags on videos in the mobile clients for Mastodon, DDG and even Safari on many videos. But this one doesn’t come up.
So, it makes me wonder what the difference is in the way the ALT text is embedded and whether there are any mobile clients where this works or if it’s exclusively available in desktop view.

There isn't anything else they can do, they've provided the correct alt text for their post. There is no alternative way they can add it because there is only one alt text field on a post.
The problem seems to be how software is handling the alt text on videos. For example the Mastodon web interface isn't showing an "Alt" button so it is more difficult to view the alt text on mobile devices.

Hey @WeirdWriter do screen readers need an "alt" button on a video to hear the alt text or do they pick it up anyway?
Are you able to hear the alt text on the post at https://mastodon.social/@DangerousSafe/115567511922604303 for example?

And if no one has told you yet, we do have bridges to Threads and Bluesky so you are able to follow some people from those two platforms as well. We used to have a bridge to X, but when Elmo Mucus started charging for API access, that was quietly retired.Next, the fediverse is made up of lots of services, I don't know them all, but you are able to get their content in your feed as well. @FediTips occasionally highlights those for us less initiated.

You can see some of the many types of server on the Fediverse here: https://fedi.tips/what-other-kinds-of-servers-are-on-the-fediverse/
For example if you follow @moxxi you'll be following an account on the video platform PeerTube, but you can interact with its videos entirely within Mastodon because they are both part of the Fediverse. More info at https://fedi.tips/what-is-mastodon-what-is-the-fediverse/
