I had a request for this one (text provided, believed to be correct, in part based on it being used by an "angry Welsh person") 😆

Considering making this the first in a series. A multilingual collection of "for fuck's sake".

I could eventually make a poster of colourful global disgruntlement.

OK, lets give this a shot. Basically with my linguistics skills I will be able to do ONE more. That would be quite a short series. To make it longer a fedi collaboration will be required 😁

If you fancy helping please let me know how to write "for fuck's sake" in your language (native, or one you're pretty fluent in - no literal translations from machines please).

Of course the big question is whether it's used elsewhere?

It *might* be a very short series 😆

      @eclectech

As a Welsh learner, I grapple with mutations (where the spelling of a word varies depending on grammatical factors).

Of all the letters in the Welsh alphabet, the only ones not involved in mutation at any point are FF and S, which always amuses me, as FFS is what I often think while trying to learn mutations.

@eclectech you can say “eccheccazzo!” in Italian to mean ffs. And in Spanish you could use “La puta que lo parió” for this. At least in Argentina.

Respectively, their literal meanings are “which dick?” and “the whore who birthed it”.

@eclectech the closest swedish equivalent would be "för i helvete" (for hell [sake]). The word for fucking isn't a swear.

@eclectech Swedish doesn't have such a versatile word for fuck, so our expression is "För helvete" which translates to "for hell."

I'm pretty sure the original saying was "for hell's sake" (för helvetes skull) but was shortened for brevity over time. 😅

@eclectech @CiaraNi I think it's the case in Scandinavian languages that their proper swear words are all religion-based, rather than, erm, carnal/physical.

@eclectech I am not good at this type of language, but I think the Dutch will be Godverdorie, the euphemistic version of Godverdomme ( God damned).
Or does FFS have a different meaning?
Or perhaps other native Dutch speakers know better?

@eclectech you can say “eccheccazzo!” in Italian to mean ffs. And in Spanish you could use “La puta que lo parió” for this. At least in Argentina.

Respectively, their literal meanings are “which dick?” and “the whore who birthed it”.

                                        We are definitely on.

Have already seen that it's not going to be a translation as such, which is fine (and exactly why I wanted to ask Proper Human People).

It is definitely the sense and usage of FFS I'm after.

So... whatever you mutter under your breath when you see the news headlines in the morning, that's what works.

But if you can give me a literal translation too that would be ace - already a couple of interesting ones in the thread 😁

@MiaMarkTwo @eclectech I feel “minchia” is much more generic and flexible, like a general expression of surprise or also of disappointment or anger.
