It works if the thread is public.
Sometimes you may see a reply to a non-public post, in which case you may only see the reply.
If it's a public thread but you can't see it, try refreshing the page, as this may trigger it into loading the rest of the thread.

In that case, try going to the three dots menu in the lower right and choose "Open original page." That usually works for me.
To see replies not in the subthread, click on the top message.

You don't need to look at the original page any more, since version 4.5.0 Mastodon automatically fetches all replies in a thread no matter what server you are on.

@FediTips I've seen this when someone has liked an old post of mine, and I can't remember what it was in reply to, so I click on it, but can't see the earlier posts. I'm not sure how old it has to be before this starts happening.

@FediTips @cptbutton The replies I see, it's the earlier posts in the thread that sometimes aren't there.

Examples: Replies to restricted posts. Replies to a restricted server? (I'm not entirely sure what's happening in those cases.) Threads where the original poster was untagged.
