    @ianturton

    Apparently. So it's similar to Ireland where everyone speaks English (and most even have it as their first language), isn't it?

    @ianturton

    It probably helps though that Luxembourgish and German are closely related, which isn't the case for Irish and English.

      @2legged An actual lord actually saying “so much for the tolerant left” in response to an anti-colonialist action is so on the nose you couldn’t make it up if you tried.

        I am staggered by the sheer hugeness of this.

        The #WelshGovernment has a policy of bilingualism. All meetings include translators, so that speakers of English or Welsh can participate equally. But every member of the Welsh Cabinet is a native speaker of #Cymraeg, so the Cabinet meetings will be held in their native lsnguage.

        #PlaidCymru #Wales

        Imposing the #EnglishLanguage was a key component of the imperial project of Britishness. But the tide has turned. 💚 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

            @HarriettMB Yes, Ireland and Scitlsnd are a long way behind.

            In particular, Ireland has failed badly. Despite a (nominally) high priority given to the Irish language throughout the era of independence, use of the language has plummeted

                      @2legged It's worth pointing out (particularly to Moylam types) that interpretation will still be available and used in the meetings by those present that don't understand Welsh, such as some of their staff and some civil servants.

                              If Wales does become independent, or more independent, I will be so amused when in 20 or 40 years the people of Anglesey demand independence from the despots in Cardiff, and then 40 years later how the people of Holyhead need their freedom

                              @failedLyndonLaRouchite @2legged I thought it was quite amusing, but then I'm from Holyhead 🙂 However, I do think that power tends to accumulate at the centre, and those at the periphery feel neglected.

                                      Diolch, @owenblacker. That's very kind.

                                      I had long intended to do some proper learning of Cymraeg, to get me beyond the few dozen words taught by my dear friends in Eryri.

                                      But these days, my energy levels are too low to take on a project like that.

                                        Imposing the #EnglishLanguage was a key component of the imperial project of Britishness. But the tide has turned. 💚 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

                                        Meanwhile in increasingly bilingual (or at least te reo Māori friendly) Aotearoa New Zealand, the right-wing coalition Government has announced that all government must use the English-first logos it is sending them by July 1.
                                        The Waitangi Tribunal, charged with protecting indigenous rights found the Crown breached the principles of te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi, including rangatiratanga (chieftainship), partnership, active protection, equity and good government.

                                        Judge Te Kani Williams said any diminishing of Crown support for the revitilisation of te reo was a matter of serious concern.
                                        The Government's Māori-second policy arises from a demand by minority party New Zealand First in the coalition agreement.

                                          @2legged Good for Wales! Language is a large part of identity. The way language shapes thinking and communication is incredible.
