    i propose a new unit: nilered. one nilered corresponds to letting $100,000 worth of equipment sit idle for 1 year

    for example, buying an oscilloscope for $1000 and not touching it for a year is "one centinilered"

    @whitequark@treehouse.systems i can tolerate equipment sitting idle (with how making videos looks like behind the scenes, he may even have plans for some of it, just lack the time - and I’m not trying to defend him, just speaking from my own experience)…

    but I stopped watching the guy after that hardware gore SEM teardown. it was so fucking sad to watch

      @whitequark@treehouse.systems yeah, totally fair. I do that with old computers a bit because it makes sense long term, but I still feel meh about it

              @whitequark Is that $100k retail or ebay price? Because I've gotten a lot of 5-figure test equipment for "broken computer" kind of scrap prices.

                  @whitequark not arbitrary enough, I say!

                  100,000 dollaronies could mean a lot or very little in comparison to different entities.

                  Let's go big with an intermediate measurement:

                  1 Nilered = idle equipment for one year of median Gross National Product / national citizen count

                        @whitequark
                        I'll add this next to "milliRonkainen".
                        One milliRonkainen is defined as the amount of surplus equipment (colloquially known as "bonk" in Finnish radio hobbyist circles) in one (1) Toyota Hiace van.
                        Thus one full Ronkainen of surplus is one thousand Toyata Hiace loads.

                          From what I hear, they were offered help from some very talented folks, including professional SEM repair people to bring it back into a working condition.
