Except Alberta govt would lice to be in the US. I figure the accusation of American style aspirations holds (even if accidental).

CORRECTION: My 81-year-old mom, who's a widow and has no photo ID was rejected today when we tried to get her a photo ID card. She's been living in Alberta since 1978 and has no current passport.

She had her birth certificate but because she changed her last name when she married in 1964, they could not issue her an ID card without her marriage certificate.

We did not know where she stashed her marriage certificate since she moved into a senior's home 3 years ago.

These new rules are going to confuse a lot of people. She needs photo ID to access her online healthcare info. If you are contacting another province for birth or marriage certificates, that will take time.

*Voting in the upcoming referendum does not require a govt-issued ID. There are other options. Phew!

Luckily for my mom, after searching through an old trunk, we found the original marriage certificate.

This UCP government is pure evil. *I stand by this statement.

Sadly this bullshit is exactly the point. These assholes hate anyone who isn't a cisgender white man and they will do anything they can to stifle voices.

Cannot overemphasise how important it is that you're helping your Mum vote. Keep it up ❤

ID requirements target women, immigrants, & the poor deliberately.

Alberta's oligarchs fight climate action by kneecapping voting.

@Npars01 @JEmphatically Of course they target women and minorities. Creeps like that always do.

While my country the Netherlands is not perfect they actually can never get in this situation. Your id, drivers license, etc are all linked to a unique government number that gets assigned at birth.
Even if you change your legal name (marriage does not change it), that number will stay the same.

And every adult will get a (person bound) voting card sent home for elections.

@bevan When you live in a place that keeps tracks of these kinda records, it is hard to image it being done any other way. When my love moved from the US to be with me in Norway, it became a bit of a lesson in "a different way of doing stuff".

Her surname-change when she married me, is recorded... In Norway.... There is apparently no recording of this in the US. We asked the embassy. They told us "just include the Norwegian name change papers when applying for a new passport..."

The idea that "the evil state should keep records of you!" is such a terrifying one, they appear to rather want to deal with all the more terrifying consequences of not having it.

Our marriage license, her name change, all such is recorded here, and will be of vital importance should she ever need to prove anything to the US authorities for a new ID.

Every 4 years, she gets a "voters card" in mail. No registration. Despite not being a citizen, she can vote in local elections.

              Without any extra registration.

@nitrml Yes, of course they do. This is politically-driven, ahead of a referendum to separate from Canada. The provincial govt (a sub--national govt) is controlled by the separatists and they are trying to confuse us ahead of the vote. *I corrected this just now.

@JEmphatically oof, that's bad. Here in Austria every citizen who has their current residence recorded in the register of residents automatically is included in the voter lists and could vote, no matter whether they actually do or not.

@nitrml My mom has lived in Alberta since 1978, pays her taxes, and has voted in every election - now the rules have changed to add this new ID requirement! Many are not aware of it. I wish we had the attitude of many other countries (besides the US) where voting is encouraged and even mandatory. * corrected - see my note about voting ID requirements.

@lrt_writes That's a big "if" - there are many, many societal pressures on women to change their last name. @newstik @TrueNorthSpice I don't know for sure, but I'd guess you'd have to provide documents showing the name change was done legally. They get to decide what is a valid document though, which is concerning with a provincial government controlled by separatists.

@TrueNorthSpice Oh, and I hear you about not changing your name. I never did and don't regret it, but for those women who choose to do so, it shouldn't put their democratic rights at risk.

If you take your spouse's name when you marry, if you're able, get a formal change of name certificate. It's not a big deal, and may save enormous hassle. We don't know how long this Trump nonsense will linger at the state and federal level.

You are 100 % missing the point.

@JEmphatically @TrueNorthSpice What kind of document would that be?
When you apply for a passport, you just need a witness who has known your under your name for IIRC 2 years.
