    "Prevost has faced criticism from advocates for clergy abuse survivors regarding his handling of sexual abuse allegations during his leadership in the Augustinian order and in Peru. The advocacy group SNAP has alleged that Prevost failed to act against abuse claims involving Richard McGrath, a former president of Providence Catholic High School, allowing him to remain in his position despite longstanding accusations."

    Guessing this part of the #Wikipedia-article will grow significantly and undergo a damn lot of source checks in the coming weeks. Interesting to see whether it will change the picture for better or for worse.

    Here's to hoping he will prove to be ok, but this is less than promising.

      Ok, if verified (I haven't had time to fact check) this is considerably better

          The above seem to be solid, and much more like that emerges. Great.

          Still quite keen to see where the cover-up story takes us. But this is much more promising than I initially thought.

          As a Lutheran I'm quite pope-less, but I'd like for my catholic friends to have someone fairly decent as pontifex.

            @SuneAuken

            I was a bit worried about having an American pope for a minute, then I saw the glowing endorsements from the American right and I knew we'd be ok.

              @ProjectFearlessness Also he is not that much of an American. It is just that suddenly we all decide to claim him as American when he popes in.

                Well, it's an awkward one and we have to get the balance right. Yes, we could say he has a mixed heritage and has a very international outlook, but that wouldn't upset the Trump supporters who need to know he's American as apple pie and he is coming for their sins.

                  Oh this is a much better discussion than I thought. I really get your point.

                  i see the opposite thing - that when we do him as an American we re-confirm that the US is the center of the world and that we're all looking at them - and so I go "Nah, not really an American".

                  I noticed that in Danish media he was Peruvian until the moment of popeness whereupon he became American.

                  So yeah, a fine discussion.

                    Yes, there is talk that they deliberately picked an American pope as a counterpoint to Trump and an example of how an American can be a godly unifying force. I wasn't in the conclave, so I don't know for sure, but I like the redemptive narrative.

                      On many points he does look like a deliberate counter to Trump. And it's glorious to see the world reject Trump's attempts at dominance with a shrug. This is more than a shrug, but it's clearly a rejection.

                          It is. Also, the fun part that Trump will hate to be reminded of is that Pope Leo has about 1.4 Billion followers. Who's got MASSIVE CROWD SIZES now?
