      @lcamtuf I had a copy of Max and Moritz when young, which is definitely in the same vein.

          Be careful which fairy tale tellers you choose. Some are quite realistic.

              @lcamtuf #Alt4You An illustration plate from Heinrich Hoffman's "The Sad Tale of the Match-Box". In this plate, Paulinchen has managed to set herself on fire. Minz and Maunz, the cats, are calling for their master, her father, to come put her out. He does not. She is reduced to a pile of ashes, wetted with cat tears.

                that both his thumbs were off at last.

                (I had an English version when I was little.)

                  @log @lcamtuf ouch! There are certainly fewer gruesome deaths in modern children's books. My youngest kid seems to prefer the old brutal style.

                    @ganxel @lcamtuf The moral lesson of the tale is, of course, to always do exactly what your cats tell you to do, the instant they speak, without delay.

                        @lcamtuf

                        Thise stories have been written by a teacher for his son to scare the sh*** out of him and make him more obedient.

                        Edit: Heinrich Hoffmann was a Doctor and Psychiatrist and not a Teacher.

                        That book became quiet popular later in raising children.

                        Today the educational attempt is seen as gruel and inappropiate.

                        I was always scared of the Thumpsucker story, though I never thucked my thump.

                        Read Grimms Fairytails too.

                        They never end in that nice Disney style.

                            @Derek_DIY @lcamtuf I am German, and I heard the Grimm versions of all those fairytales way before watching the Disney animations. And I liked the original versions much better. Being scary and disturbing is the whole point of fairytales. It's the stuff grandmothers told their grandchildren to prepare them for a scary world.
