@rupertcutler @lenotaire Ha yes. "Welcome. Now here's your homework, go do it"
@CiaraNi @rupertcutler work in sunday? Oh dear, where I put myself into

-
@psneeze Yes it is! I can't believe there are people who walk this earth saying Skon Skon Skon.
-
@CiaraNi Noone ever mentioned a word about me being on .social.
Someone recommended Fedi.Tips and there I read about the servers.
I like my .social for now and I'm still learning my way through Mastodon, so I'm staying where I am.
If I move it'll be because I decide to, not because others tell me to.
Everyone I've been in contact with have been very welcoming and friendly.
Oh - I thought it moved everything when you move...
@lykkebrammer Fedi.tips is brilliant! I'm glad you like .Social. I love the fact that we can all meet and chat in here, regardless which server we're one.
"I thought it moved everything when you move' - I daren't say with 100% certainty as I've never investigated it myself. But I think you can take your people with you, everyone you follow and who follows you, but not your actual post history.
-
@falcennial I mean, don't get me wrong, I think Facebook has done terrible actual damage to people and social relations and society and politics, but I think we can just have a nice cuppa first before getting into the subject

@CiaraNi
I have to agree. -

@lenotaire @rupertcutler If you don't have a dog, borrow one from someone on DogsOfMastodon and the dog can eat your homework for you

@CiaraNi @bleistifterin @rgarner amateurs tea is supposed to hurt, teaspoon of loose leaves, boil for a min and steep for at least 5. The best pull is the stuff that is forgotten for a day at the bottom in the swamp of leaves, almost opaque, caffeine content over 9000, bitter like the soul of a 16y old goth who just got dumped
@Primavera You remind me that I wanted to colour some fabric with tea today, thanks!
@CiaraNi @rgarner -
@johnlorimer @annika Such a shame, when something we enjoy gets destroyed like that. So much AI asbestos has been stuffed into the walls of the internet.

@CiaraNi I'm on .social. When I joined Mastodon a few weeks ago I didn't know about anything about all the different servers and how to join them.
Now I know a tiny bit more, but I've yet to deside if I'm moving and where to move to.
You're right that before you've landed here and gotten oriented, it's an impossible ask to figure that out. Both similar and different enough to commercial social media - which makes it harder
(I've also been considering hopping instances to a server hosted in Europe, but so far that's also been an impossible ask, even with well written guides telling me exactly how to do it)
-
@psneeze Yes it is! I can't believe there are people who walk this earth saying Skon Skon Skon.
-
@CiaraNi And maybe a nice biscuit or a scone.
-
@grb090423 @CiaraNi @psneeze I always say skon because when it scone, it's gone.

That's my understanding as well. The people I know who have moved servers generally keep their old accounts up if they want to maintain their media / post archive. The folks who set everything to self destruct (delete) don't have that problem

@CiaraNi
Every time someone says to get off of the big srrvers a techbro puts his hands on a window and laughs like the Sickos guy. -

@CiaraNi it’s a start they can migrate later if they so choose. I personally think they’re better open signup free instances but that’s me. Most normies will go for the default.
-
@CiaraNi I say skon. It's the correct way, a northern hill to die on.
@DavidBridger See, this is why you had to leave the EU. We can't be having people wander round the Union saying Skon.
(I'm pretending not to remember that friends in Cork say Skon too.)
-
@grb090423 @CiaraNi @psneeze I always say skon because when it scone, it's gone.
That's the argument my OH uses... what's the fastest cake in the world: scone. (skon)
Half my family are from the midlands and upwards (UK) and it seems more folk there say "sc-oh-ne".

@CiaraNi (I'm having matcha
) I understand smaller instances need to prevent bots etc and minority communities especially need some screening before registration. But when I made my general purpose account, I didn't want to write a little essay about myself and be vetted on whether I can exist there. So the social it goes. especially when I don't even introduce myself to people in real life lol. I now just have multiple accounts on multiple instances for different stuff. -
