Fediverse groups are really useful accounts to follow.

Fediverse groups are really useful accounts to follow. They are sort of "super hashtags" as their posts reach everyone who follows the group, no matter what server they are on. You can find out more at:
They aren't like groups on other platforms, it's better to think of them as hashtags that federate more effectively.
Follow a group to see its discussions in your timelines, mention a group to post to it. (It's like old-style email discussion lists.)

@FediTips Do you know of anywhere that I could find an open group on either Frendica or Diaspora?
I want to go through the experience of joining one as a mastodon user so that I can talk to people about relocating their facebook group here.

AFAIK there is no way to post from Mastodon to Diaspora as they use different protocols. However, if you have a Friendica account you can post simultaneously to both Mastodon (ActivityPub) and Disapora.
I'm not sure how groups on Friendica are distributed to Diaspora, perhaps @hypolite might be able to provide advice?

@FediTips Thanks, I don't personally want to run a group, but want to find one that I can join on Frendica to go through the process of doing so and then to see how they function. I guess I could open a Frendica account, but that'a not really what I'm hoping to do.

The group systems currently on here aren't really like the groups on Facebook.
A much closer thing on the Fediverse would be the numerous Reddit-like Fedi platforms such as Mbin and Piefed, or the forums like NodeBB. They are part of the Fedi but much closer in function to FB groups.

@FediTips I don't think gup.pe is the way to go in terms of having groups in #Fediverse
Much better is anything #Lemmy (or similar) based or #Friendica approach with expected moderation and such stuff.
I don't think random bot-created account doing only reshares is future- and spambot-proof

They are not the same thing or the same purpose as Reddit-like groups. Their function and intention is very different.
That's why I think Guppe-style groups should be regarded as super-hashtags because that better describes their function.
if you see bad content on a hashtag you report it, and the same goes for bad content on Guppe-style groups.
This is discussed in the guide at https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse/

Their advantage over hashtags is they federate much more effectively. This is especially important if you're on a smaller server.
Guppe posts are delivered to every group follower's server, whereas hashtag posts are only delivered to servers that have already noticed the account posting.
Guppe groups actively push content in a way that hashtags don't.
