Today we launched https://code.overheid.nl: the NL government-wide code platform 🥳🥳
Code.overheid.nl is a pilot in which we are going to test @forgejo; an open source and sovereign alternative to GitHub/GitLab.
This is an initiative of @BZKopensource, in collaboration with our friends from team DAWO (SSC-ICT), @opensource , @developer , and a number of participating government orgs.

@tomootes from developer.overheid wrote a nice piece about it: https://developer.overheid.nl/blog/2026/04/24/we-gaan-samen-code-overheid-bouwen
@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer marvellous! Well done everyone
I'm hoping this will get a lot of traction and I'm certainly willing to do my part within DICTU and DUO

@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer Awesome! I wish #Canadians could similarly get their acts together. There is a limp-biscuited, vague policy on sovereignty here, but nothing to speak of really seems to come from it:

@reinouts Forgejo development is not held captive by a US company. Good luck merging a feature that competes with an enterprise offering to Gitlab CE.

@reinouts Forgejo development is not held captive by a US company. Good luck merging a feature that competes with an enterprise offering to Gitlab CE.
@slotos While they're officially headquartered in the US, they have always been a fully remote company with Ukrainian and Dutch founders, IIRC.
I do see that merging enterprise features into CE might not be accepted by GitLab inc., but then again, the EE sales are what keeps development going. It's a double-edged sword. -

It's a double-edged sword.@reinouts The country of incorporation is what’s important. It dictates how corporation has to act towards its shareholders.
Nationality of the founders is irrelevant here.
Also, I didn’t say „merging enterprise features”, I said „feature that competes with an enterprise offering”. It is a contribution gatekeeping system driven by US legal precedent.

@Gina, congrats on this great milestone!
It's awesome that government agencies are thinking about these important initiatives, wish we had a team like yours in our Ministry of digital transformation (Ukraine)... Fingers crossed for your success! 🤩

@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer oh, cool! I was only half-teasing though. I had clicked through some of your announcement docs and when I tried the Forgejo "Try it now" link it used Anubis and said "Made with

" and I thought it was great that Dutch digital sovereignty would be protected by Canadians.

@Gina I’m always cheering for government and the public sector adopting OSS projects like @forgejo!
Do @BZKopensource and other participating organizations contribute (financially and in persondays) to the sustainability of the project?
I mean either hiring the volunteers who work on it, directly contributing to the project, or supporting Forgejo financially
