Elon appears to be doing the usual "ask for forgiveness instead of permission" shit, taking advantage of our regulators allowing for "self-certification" that they then attempt to poke holes in after-the-fact, rather than the agency themselves performing the certification from the beginning.

@jesuislibre It wasn't quite clear in the original post that you considered "stupid procedures" to cover both the absurd "safety procedures" tesla came up with and the broken "self-certification" procedure.
And yeah, self-certification needs to go die in a fire. It can only work when all parties are acting in good faith, and several of them have shown they have negative interest in doing so, instead preferring to pull stupid stunts like this before the wheels of bureaucracy can catch up.

I'm absolutely not saying that authorities are perfect, or even that they've not been negligent here, because I do not have much love or respect for authorities in general and they fuck up all the time.
but it's dangerous to automatically conclude "the authorities must have failed" *just* because it hasn't been fixed yet, because that's *exactly* the kind of rhetoric that people like musk weaponize to justify their "ignore consequences and just do a thing" approach, framing themselves as a hero fighting the unjust authorities while actually enriching themselves -
