I have a #fediverse and or #mastodon question. Does my profile address have to be mastodon social to be able to make a group? If it's fediverse and I stuck there? Is this like living in a city but not being able to see the whole state? i hope I'm asking this #question correctly! #help

@Shewolfnm i’m not sure what you mean by a group but you’re not stuck anywhere. you can transfer your profile to any Mastodon server instance that you’d like. typically you view all others together meaning you search and follow people on all servers. You can also just view your local server timeline, which is what I’ve been doing here a lot. You can also just view specific servers if you want to, but I’m not sure what that use case is.

@Shewolfnm haha the fediverse is confusing! But being on mastodon social gives you no extra powers. You’re good where you are! You should be able to see any groups you want. Just follow the group like you would a person. I personally don’t know how to *make* groups, but @FediTips might have good advice (usually does!)

@Shewolfnm As far as I understood, anyone can make a group, but it may take some time to be approved, as this has to be done manually.
Also they state that mastodon (which is only one part of the fediverse) works best and other platforms (e.g. friendica, peertube, ...) may not be able to follow the group.
I think the term "server type" in this sentence may be a bit misleading --> "If you are using another server type across the fediverse, you may be unable to follow these groups."

@lumiukko that makes sense! I have been reading through some of the help posts and pages to understand how this works. I thought you could just CREATE one and it would work similar to a reddit type page. That's not the case here. I've much to still learb

I sort of pictured it similar to reddit in that just like there, if you are in a group, you won't SEE the rest of reddit until you exit that group and go back to the home page.
Here it seems similar so my brain can chew on that and follow it but I am reading through some of the help posts as well. -

Yup, there's no advantage to mastodon.social whatsoever. You can create a group from any Fediverse server, more info about groups at https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse
I'd strongly advise people *not* to join mastodon.social - https://fedi.tips/its-a-really-bad-idea-to-join-a-big-server/
