@Gina There are thankfully mobile options already. With GrapheneOS - you can even run a "closed off" google services api - to get chromecast working.
If you can do without chromecast - e/OS (with locked bootloader)- means netflix, banking apps etc. works fine.
Of all the apps I have tried only McDonalds app won't work on any of them 🙂
Jolla afaik runs the same - even though its not even Android.

@Gina no - I assume all is great with MijnBureau and DAWO. The problem is that no one wants to deploy anything, no matter how great the solutions are.

It's ridiculous that we basically have two mobile 'options', both with restrictive, proprietary app stores (see also https://keepandroidopen.org/).

If Europe values digital sovereignty, then it needs to invest more in open hardware, open source OS's, and alternative app stores. 🇪🇺

There was a public consultation about open source recently - that means there may be an update in the EU open source strategy soon? Probably they are analysing results now…

True, we were one of many many orgs and people that provided input. It should be mentioned that we're very impressed with how proactive the European Commission has been so far when it comes to their open source strategy. But mobile seems a forgotten area (for us at a national level as well). Big fan of @HennaVirkkunen btw!

@Gina @bert_hubert @defuneste If that's the strategy, they're awfully quiet about it. The prime minister and/or @stasdigi and/or @staatssecretarisbzk should be announcing the migration strategy. Now is also a great time for them to urge local government to write migration plans into the new municipal coalition plans.

I am not smart enough to get the strategy but for an "IT make it works pov", introducing one new stuff at a time is usually a good bet to have some "buy in".

@Gina @bert_hubert @defuneste That all makes sense, but then why are there some seemingly obvious huge IT risks that governments seem not to notice? I’m thinking of the Dutch toeslagenaffaire, which is currently being repeated in France.

@simonjust @Gina You can't do that with *any* mobile OS, open or not, and you absolutely certainly still won't for a good while. It's not a good goal to target.

You can already use it on specific well-supported devices, or work on supporting other specific devices well. That's how you can make a tangible difference today.

@simonjust @Gina You can't do that with *any* mobile OS, open or not, and you absolutely certainly still won't for a good while. It's not a good goal to target.

You can already use it on specific well-supported devices, or work on supporting other specific devices well. That's how you can make a tangible difference today.

I'm glad that we're finally realizing that we need open source alternatives for the desktop and our apps, but can we also focus on mobile devices now?

@Gina there is only 1 EU desktop OS and it's on the verse to be selled SUSE.

so in desktop we don't have much either.

                                        @Gina @EC_DIGIT @EUCommission

There was a public consultation about open source recently - that means there may be an update in the EU open source strategy soon? Probably they are analysing results now…

@hpod16 @Gina @EC_DIGIT @EUCommission @HennaVirkkunen any contact for the team that manage high fligh selling ?

the only EU based linux system company use is for sale, and if the EU don't intervene it might leave EU without any choice when it come to professional use of sovereign os.
