@jerrej @nesce @MarkHoltom I mostly don't bother to attempt to use the QR codes for ordering. Apart from the general lunacy one would have to suffer from to scan *any* QR code in a public place, I've never yet found a system that lets you order things you actually want, like for example "the burger but with no cheese" or "the biryani but with a peshwari nan instead of a plain one". So you have to end up ordering from a human anyway, so why waste time pissing around with a useless "app" first?
@TimWardCam @nesce @MarkHoltom
The app would be the absolute worst case scenario. How about just a website, eh? But then maybe the website (or app) has an "I need assistance" button which would prove more useful? How would you find out, ignoring the QR code? Maybe just call their landline and someone behind the bar will pick up the phone. Then you explain where you are and that you would like to speak to an actual person at your table.

How quickly we get entirely side-tracked from the original Important Message. I blame the acronyms.
@jerrej @nesce @TimWardCam @MarkHoltom
I suggest it’s not a sidetrack; the message we should be extrapolating from the OP is that there are appropriate uses of technology, and there are inappropriate ones. And adding pressure to restaurant staff to save some of the wage bill, thereby enshittifying the dining experience, is certainly one example of inappropriate technology. -

My anecdote was about a bar with like fifty terrace tables, with an additional service of some simple snack food, but I get where you're going. I wouldn't want a dining experience through QR codes, websites, or apps either, let alone the "AI assistents" that are obviously coming soon to a bar or restaurant near you. *shudder*

@MarkHoltom That's like being against mathematics! If you throw out the machine learning out goes pattern matching cancer detection, protein folding and a whole bunch of stuff that regular computing couldn't do in a thousands years! Know the real enemy - capitalism!

One time I was in a large group, so tried the QR code rather than go up to the bar to order, then had to type in the table number from the same plack that was nailed to the table with the QR code on! They had had a unique plack made for each table but they all had exactly the same QR code so the system couldn't automatically identify where you were sitting! -
@TimWardCam @MarkHoltom .... and is used in science, in radiology, but the name is too close to "chat bot" and the masses cannot understand the difference so we must destroy it. 🫠
@nesce @TimWardCam @MarkHoltom
or they just ignored the difference for the sake of the pun, assuming most people who would get the reference, would also be aware there is nuance to the subject, even if they don't know all the details. -
