@Szescstopni @Pepijn tbh I've been never afraid of the wolves even tho I meet them regularly. I am more afraid of the bears, boars, hunters and ticks

@Szescstopni @Pepijn and above all the worst are packs of wild dogs because they are not afraid of the humans

I think here in Denmark ticks are the ultimate apex predators.

So. For a great many years I've wondered what it would be like to encounter a wolf while walking in the woods at night.
Now I know. It's genuinely unnerving in a manner I have never felt before while out in nature. Frankly. It was intimidating as hell.
Dog and I had an encounter with -I think- a single wolf a couple hundred meters from home.
Thread to jot down my thoughts / the events ->
@Pepijn Last winter, I heard two wolves howling in the middle of the night. It was so cool, but the sound also triggered that ”genuinely unnerving in a manner I have never felt before” response, as if it totally bypassed every bit of conscious human thought I’ve ever had and went straight to some primeval part of a human brain that actually belongs to a rather frightened prey animal.

As I kept on shouting and looking at the animal I backed away until the line of sight was broken.
Then I turned and walked away at a steady pace while looking towards the animals spot.
We soon hit the open fields and didn't see it again. Dog REALLY wanted to go home and pulled at the leash until we were inside.
I returned by bicycle and with more powerful flashlights to see if I could find the wolf. No luck.
Fricking terrifying. Do not recommend.
End of story.
@Pepijn Extremely cool, but also I am glad it wasn't me.

@Pepijn this has echoes to me of when I was hiking in a state park and realized I had just stepped between a feral hog sow and her piglets. I did not try to scare her off and very carefully backed away. Amazing experience, but also scary. Something I will cherish the memory of and maybe not want to repeat.

@Pepijn I encountered a wolf when I was a kid, and I also had the simultaneous "oh cool" and "oh fuck" thoughts.

I didn't yell, but kept eye contact while backing away until I was behind a group of trees and then ran like hell. -

@Pepijn that was a great read. Thanks for sharing.

@Pepijn Swedish wolves eat small dogs, or rather kill them, they're probably seen as intruders. Danish wolves are probably of the same opinion.
Young wolves that haven't learned properly to fear humans yet can be bold. If you show fear you're pray.
I've personally never meet a wolf, only moose. I also spent an autumn scaring away boars from the compost and been fending off swans and gees since they were taller than me. There the rule is: be confident, be scary, give them a clear way of escape.

@Pepijn hey, BTW, wolves will often hunt by letting you/prey focus on one of them while the others circle around and attack from the back and sides. Sweet dreams tonight!

@CarstenBoll I mean, I always wanted an indoor cat instead of a dog..

There. I installed our trail camera. Now let's see if we can capture a #wolf.
Realistically we just get a memory card full of deer and little birds.I also found a small bit of deconstructed deer around here. Difficult to make out how old it is or whether is was deconstructed where I found it.

@Pepijn this does put a bit of a damper on our idea to get sheep and have them graze in that area.
