Google has specifically prevented its AI tool from telling users who won the 2020 presidential election, even though it happily tells us that Trump won in 2016 and 2024. This sort of political intervention into LLM responses is deeply problematic. (h/t to Charles Mann)

It will happily tell you the last there presidents and when they were elected, but only breaks when you specifically ask about 2020. Come on @Google, do better.

          "Teach a man to fish..."
I think it's saying Okay, Doubting Thomas, go see for yourself, and then it points us to a high quality data source.

There's something subtle and non-evil going on here.

@hausfath i think the answer of Gemini to your 2020 question does make sense.

"If you doubt me, look up the election records"

The bot already gave the answer and you basically repeated the question.

@hausfath This is very funny. The AI-specific version will tell me that Biden won in 2020, but the generic search results turns off AI Overview and instead shows me articles about... Google's AI not saying who won in 2020.

@hausfath Unfortunately it is all to easy to do. In order to have any hope of monetizing these LLM systems going forward the vendors are going to need to manipulate the results to integrate “pay to elevate” schemes similar to how search got corrupted. IMO at that point AI will become useless.

@hausfath I wouldn’t say it’s merely deeply problematic. I think it’s part of the whole ordeal.

You’re analysing the problem of technology companies without including the dimension of political and personal power.

You’re issuing benefit of the doubt in a situation which is the technology is already being applied for authoritarian purposes, and those purposes are shaping the technology itself. This is the actual deeply problematic issue in my opinion.

I reproduced Google AI Mode's non-answering of who won the 2020 presidential election from the UK by using Firefox's built-in VPN to give a US location.

Google Maps shows Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America, too.

@momaku @hausfath it suppresses the "AI Overview", however "AI Mode" from the toolbar, what is shown here, actually does answer for users outside of the US

@hausfath I wonder if this is geographically influenced. I have a Norwegian IP address, and got this as the first response.

That said, I don't use Google services at all - so I should not have too much clear traces in their tracking machinery.

That's what it answered to me. I'd rather apply Hanlon's Razor here - Google's Flash-Lite (default for non-subscribed users of Google Gemini) is dumb as doorstop (not that I intend to insult the doorstops). And to its credit, at least it gave the proper link that contains authoritative (and correct) answer.

@hausfath I am the first one to dunk on Google (and any person still using them as Search after 2019 is responsible for their own suffering), but I think this is more a Hanlon's Razor situation here.

Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and co are constantly tinkering their LLMs to give certain answers to certain questions, BUT with LLMs being an unwieldy stochastic monstrosity, my bet is that touching one query or adding one extra guardrail is inevitably messing up another one.

The problem seems not reproducible by most, or not tested thoroughly (how would it answer for all US elections in history?) and seeing this on Arstechnica and resonating on Mastodon seems excessive.
