So, since the "the fediverse needs to be open to new ideas" canard is going around again, let's just be clear. AI is not a new idea, it's the oldest idea in the tech industry.
It's the idea that capital can embrace, extend, and extinguish computing, the idea that industry is more important than labor, that the climate crisis is an externality not worth worrying about. AI is the idea that stocks matter more than people.

@xgranade and we've been working on it with digital logic for over 70 years already. Still haven't got it right, or even vaguely close.

@xgranade
What I love about any/all canards going about the most is that... heh... canarder... like... the fediverse... errrmmm... nobody's 'in charge' you know... really... like... nobody
OK, 'canarder' may not be a real word.

@skyfaller @xgranade Everybody knows that all restaurants are Taco Bell.

@xgranade I agree with your main point, but just to say, in terms of other internet spaces where they go hard on LLMs, I think some of these crazy kids on Lemmy are doing the Lord's work
and in general across other spaces on Lemmy which aren't explicitly about shitting on LLMs, from what I've seen, the takes seem sane the majority of the time.
But I think this fits your point actually: both spaces (Masto & Lemmy) have much less pressure to lick corporate boots, so people tend to get less caught up in this frenzy of claiming their allegiance to the Shiny New Tech Thing

The Fediverse has been open to quite a lot of new ideas. Many of these ideas are considered, often at length, and then discarded when it so transpires that the ideas are, in fact, shit.
The Techbro contingent are certainly trying to pretend that their Bright New Thing isn't just an exploitative variant on every fucking technological snake oil that we've seen since someone banged two rocks together to make fire, but we have no reason to treat their world-burning chatbots with any more faith than the assholes trying to convince us that ivermectin, wolfsbane and placenta are a panacea.

@skyfaller the existence of any space that does not reaffirm Received Truth is inherently a threat to it

@xgranade this remind me of the old "if you want that, do it yourself. *do the thing themselves*. wait, no, what are you doing, that's not allowed è_é"
