@evan I want to change mine to yes, but despair can be addictive. And sometimes our responsibility is to find the necessary courage. There are contexts where despair is not OK. So I withdraw my yes full stop.

        Thanks all who replied.

One of my favourite scenes from the TV show Lost is in the Pilot episode, when lead character Jack explains to love interest Kate how he learned to overcome fear as a neurosurgeon. He would give himself a chance to fully feel the fear, get absolutely panicked, but only for five seconds.

Later in the episode, Kate is being chased by a scary monster. Her companions have fallen and she has to go rescue her. She hides in a banyan tree and, gulping and sobbing, counts to 5.

I am not an psychologist, but from my brief Google research, it seems like there is some argument to be made for this strategy. At the very least, picking the time when you absolutely lose your shit means it doesn't happen when you're right in the middle of a challenge. You can feel your bad feelings at the right time for you, not when you're halfway across the rope line or whatever.
