Launching their new social network, W, the EU posted a map of where other social networks are hosted.

@ricci It’s undercounting for sure. I don’t see mine on there for instance. I run GoToSocial.
@johan yeah, I'm guessing you probably have the option to hide public stats turned on? my crawler respects that option

@ricci Possibly?

️ I’ll go check cause I don’t actually mind to be findable -
@colinburgess @ricci @xrobau are birds even real?
-
@jollysea @UlrikeHahn read the post

️ I’ll go check cause I don’t actually mind to be findable@johan hmm looks like you are not in the host list I'm using for some reason
-
@colinburgess @xrobau thanks maybe I can pull this kind of thing from their API, I'll check
Also, unrelated, I'm the owner of xrob.org so uh hi
@ricci I'm not sure if the data in FediDB is accurate.
mastodon.uno has an Italian description but is stated to be hosted in France.
https://fedidb.com/software/mastodon?search=uno®ion=europe@fedidb what is the information source for the location in FediDB?
-
@jollysea I realize they are not a government entity. But they are using a .eu domain (yes I know basically anyone can get one) so clearly this is the way they're trying to sell themselves
@ricci I think its a good idea to own one's mistakes and make it clear when you edit a post. I agree with you on the substance, they are selling themselves for something they are not.

@fedidb @colinburgess @xrobau @Segebodo FWIW I'm not using fedidb for my data, my crawler is documented here: https://arewedecentralizedyet.online/fetch-nodeinfo-bot.html
I'm using ipinfo.io for geolocation - but, like fedidb, I can't tell where hosts behind CDNs are automatically. But if they have a system for letting admins indicate their location, and expose it via API, I can maybe get a better guess for some behind CDNs

@jollysea if you look at the post you'll see that I did

Launching their new social network, W, the EU posted a map of where other social networks are hosted. It showed nothing in Europe.
But their map is wrong.
Here's what Mastodon actually looks like, and what the Fediverse as a whole actually looks like.
@ricci
Even naming themselves after X, which is Elon's blind path and not the Twitter many fell into an abusive but somewhat beneficial relationship with, is a red flag. -

@ricci
I had thought perhaps they weren't showing the local servers in order to protect them. -
@ozzelot yeah I don't know they think they're trying to do here
@ricci
I think they're trying to do European Big Tech, blissfully unaware that Big Tech is seen by many as one of America's many illnesses, not a goal to strive towards. (Or aware and they think that point of view is wrong somehow.) -

@ricci I bet it’s owned by another bunch of techbros. Just techbros not from USA.
Let’s call them ’Eurobros’ because they just want to do a repeat inside Europe of what the neoliberal project managed to make of the US.
@gimulnautti @ricci Surveillance photo of Eurobros financing the hosting deal

Even naming themselves after X, which is Elon's blind path and not the Twitter many fell into an abusive but somewhat beneficial relationship with, is a red flag.The idea I presume is mainly for Brussels to be able to say "We're not dependent on american big tech" and win good boy points with Evropeans.
It would be nice if all EU government entities used something where their posts could be accessed from the outside, but since i read you'll have to send a photo of your penis in order to use W, I wont hold my breath.
Also let's keep in mind this is a for-profit company. It's not some kind of an official TWITTER of Europe.

@ricci I don't see any Misskey instance on the map, is it just a bug or Misskey problem?
