how we act around each other, gender related or not, is very different in church/mosque/temple, vs the home, vs the street, vs the coffee shop, vs employment scenario, etc
how a person acts in their home country vs adopted country is all code switching too
anyone can grasp context and expectations instantly
"we have to teach them" seems condescending to me

This is about 'culture fit' isn't it.
Like, if that culture is yt cis dude sports huel bro-down last in the office wins, then that's the way it is and you have to fit in.
But if the culture is queer/trans positive syndicalist caring-responsibility and MH aware diversity forward then that's dangerous and discriminatory?
No. Tech interviews are nice, but what you really want to do is avoid dickheads who'll break a working team.

@benroyce Really? That's nuts, I got taught that in an interview you make an effort to address everyone there. It's an _interview_, they're all deciding to hire you or not.
Maybe I should write a book on how to mask like a human. But then again, some techbro might read it, so perhaps not.

There are a lot of US cultural assumptions that are awkward in the UK, make no sense at all in .de and even less in .pl (for instance)
Yet us anglophones are still making those assumptions.
Also, writing about any of it requires technical language in the same way that writing about, say, unix does.

@benroyce For reference I hate interviews / the thought of interviews. Luckily I've managed to never have a job interview in my entire working career.

alternatively you answer by sheepishly staring into your lap and never raising your head the entire interview

@benroyce In one company, we had an all-female interview round, because a lot of men behaves like assholes when they're in the room only with women.

@benroyce Great. New vague stress to add to the interview process. Should I be talking to everyone when I answer questions or just the asker? What if I forget to look to different people and I've landed on the wrong one that makes me appear sexist? Can I look at no one? One of my goals when I interview is to make the person comfortable and assure them there are no trick questions. When you're having a comfortable conversation with someone you'll often get a sense of who they are.

@benroyce I'm a fan of the "Be nice to the person who brings in the coffee and snacks" test, because an old boss pulled it a lot and it cut out soooo many assholes.
Start the interview with one person, either sex. Second, also either sex, enters five minutes later, with snacks and drinks, apologizing up and down.
Then see how the candidate reacts when the second person sits and asks a question.
