As water privatisation, the Horizon IT scandal, the Grenfell fire & numerous other corporate actions from water depleting data centres to the impact of the supermarket oligopoly on the UK's food system attest, this is not (likely never was) true.
Only when Govt.'s are more sceptical of the business interest will we be able to build a good & just society!

@ChrisMayLA6 There is a related misunderstanding of risk - that businesses will take risks, which may include with the lives of others, in order to maximise profits.
Coupled with this is a failure to understand long-term consequences of actions/ inactions. Under invest in part of the system and no-one will notice for a while. But as things slowly and inexorably decline, the risk of failure increases until it can no longer be hidden - think pothole on UK highways.
The cost of failure is born by society, not the businesses. At worst, they go bust, but we all still end up picking up the pieces.

@ChrisMayLA6 yes. What's the aim of business? First and always, make a profit. Whatever else it's in the business of doing, it will always come second. Maybe other considerations might enter into it, but profit first.
