@luckytran my great-grandmother was Frieda Lina Hildenbrand. Only her sister Luise Katherine survived to adulthood. Her parents buried at least five babies.

    These people are monsters.

@luckytran Our pediatrician has a sign close to the front desk: you don't have to vaccinated all your kids, just the ones you want to keep.
They also make unvaccinated sick kids wait outside - to protect everybody else.

In 1950 global child mortality rate was 27%. Now it is as low as 0.3%.

@luckytran I remember when doctors asked me: So these are mandatory and these are optional with quite deep explanation and with my wife we need not more than second to answer, give him all you have in portfolio. So he is also vaccinated against meningococcal diseases, etc.

@luckytran We are currently researching our ancestors. They used the first name David over generations. There were 6 Davids within 10 years. Married Family with a David and same last name: 1. Married David later: 1. These 6 Davids were 6 kids, 5 of them died early.

The grave stones are long gone. The church records are still there.

I'm all for vaccinating kids when the evidence for efficacity is so clear - but I believe the biggest contributions to the decline in infant mortality have come from public health works - especially clean piped water and public sewers - or state-regulated septic tanks - district nurses, etc, etc... state infrastructure taking care of its people.

I'm out of the 40's, had some of those diseases and was lucky. Had Friends that weren't so lucky. If people want their children healthy they will get them vaccinated, those who don't aren't paying attention. It's as simple as that. How many have had measles of late.

@luckytran tbf you actually rarely see those graves

Not because babies didn't die, but because there either was no grave stone for them and∕or those graves were long removed.

                        This kinda doesn't work.

@dat @luckytran Depends on where you live.

In french cemetery there's a lot of familial graves, and the babies are often a line on those.

When you see a grave with only a dead baby name on it, that's a dead baby with rich parents.

even in family graves a lot families didn’t even consider adding really young children there.

like died before age 3? not relevant!

why? because it was REALLY common.

If it survived the first few years? then it might survive into adulthood.

In 1880, roughly one ninth of all persons born in the USA died before age 1, one fifth before age 5.

Why the big difference between that graph (from the UN) and this page (from US Census data) for deaths below age 5 in 1880?

                                    https://www2.census.gov/library/publications/decennial/1880/vol-11-12-mortality/1880v11-01.pdf#page=14

The death rates in the graph appear around 50% higher than the census population mortality table for 1880.

My recollection is that even the American Experience table from the 1840's (which probably had the mortality rates padded to slant the odds in favor of the insurance companies) showed only about 25% mortality before age 5 (although the juvenile extension part of the table may have been added later).

                                      @gbargoud @luckytran

Not sure, I tried to dig into the data for the UN one but the site was not mobile friendly and then I forgot to look it up again by the time I was at a computer

@Selvari21106 @KanaMauna @luckytran that's why you had like ten of them... And some cultures didn't give people names until they were 100 days old.

No, seriously - we seriously underestimate how much grief and pain that meant. Not to mention women dying in labor.

I hate people who don't vaccinate their kids.
