This quote rings particularly loud for me today in light of this story from Bona Books, about coming within a whisker of contaminating an anthology with extruded mediocre:
https://www.bona-books.com/news/we-bought-an-ai-story
While they’re relatively philosophical about the new challenges of this type of fraud, the toll taken on a group of volunteers trying to do something good in the world must have been, and will continue to be, extensive.

"What we no longer believe is that we will always be able to look at an AI story and know.
Bona Books accidentally bought an AI story. Indeed, we very nearly bought two, with a further three longlisted.
And this is a problem bigger than just us."
This makes me feel a tad better for having unwittingly bought some AI books and read them, without knowing.

@wendypalmer This gives me some hope that eventually we will get much more clear on the GenAI signature / tell-tale marks and collectively get more effective at sniffing out the slop.

@HollieK72 yes! It’s an easy mistake to make when you’re unaware of what to look for (and time-consuming to filter it when you are aware of what to look for, which also changes), and it’s unfair to expect readers to spot it.
I hate the idea of accusing indie writers without evidence, but the editors at Bona Books were clear they only thought to check thanks to help from their community. So open discussion might be the only way for readers to wade through.

@malte yes, hopefully. It’ll be an ever-moving target. in their full report, they talk about editors needing resources and training to keep on top of it, just like bank clerks have training to spot fraud (and it is fraud, if their submissions guidelines specifically disallow slop). It might get to the point writers submit evidence with their submissions.
Or maybe the AI bubble will collapse, and it won’t be free/cheap for scammers to produce fake stories anymore and they’ll move on to the next fraud.
