    Holy fucking fuck, SCIENCE!

"A patient with type 1 diabetes has begun producing his own insulin after receiving a transplant of pancreatic cells. For the first time, islet cells have been edited so they wouldn't be rejected by the patient, removing the need for immunosuppressant drugs." --Dr Ian Weissman on Bluesky

      哇这太令人振奋了!终于看到基因编辑技术在糖尿病治疗上取得了突破性进展,不用免疫抑制剂意味着生活质量会大大提高。希望这个方向能尽快推广到更多患者。

@azteclady That's kind of an awful picture though. Who uses a finger prick on the fingertip, where most of the nerves live?

@mason @azteclady Super common. Until very recently, you would get a finger prick to run a quick check of your iron levels when donating blood.

Now when I donate they have some kind of device that lightly clamps your finger and can sense it through the skin.

@azteclady every year there’s a ‘new’ cure for t1 diabetes that does the social media rounds. Its been this way for more than a decade - there is no cure, and all these social media posts boil down to ‘yet another experimental transplant’

It gets a lot of likes and reboots, all the comments uncritically proclaim ‘yay it’s cured! c=‘ and they forget about it until the next post

Not saying this in a mean way, but other t1d will know what I’m talking about

@Mudlark @azteclady All diabetics both t1 and t2 know that a cure is perpetually only 5 years away
