Glædelig mandag. It’s one of those gentle Mondays, here in Denmark, because it’s a day off for most people. A public holiday. Pinse. Whitsun. Pentecost. Here’s a Pinse-postcard from #Aarhus, just to wish you a good Monday and a good week.

@pgogl A 'sprit' - danke! All I could think of was 'boom', but I knew that wasn't quite right. 'Sprit' seems to suit something as spiky yet pretty as that. Sprit, spirit, spirits, sprite - a snappy sound.

@CiaraNi Yes, and in german with an addition: "Bug sprit" / "Bug" means the nose, "Heck" for the tail of a ship

I didn't know the name for that long, beautifully polished wooden pole-ey boom-ey stickey-out bit on the front of the royal yacht. So I couldn't describe it properly in the Alt Text, and said so. Tak and danke and thank you to @pgogl for helping me out here. It is a called a 'sprit'. That name suits it, I think. A snappy spikey spirited sprit. That was a pleasing thing to learn.

The "bovspryd" is the "bowsprit".
Both are from some sort of netherlandish precursor "spret", which was a spear/spyd. -

@CiaraNi Det kunne jo også være den slags sprit man skyller en klump jaka-bov ned med, men jo mindre sagt om det, jo bedre.
