I hate headlines like this. You read the article and discover she works in finance, he runs a life coaching business whatever that is, and they retired once their savings hit £1 million which didn't come from making their own sandwiches.
Meanwhile out in the real world most of us have been bringing packed lunches to work since the 2010s at least and are still one unexpected vet bill away from a couple of months of home haircuts.
@afewbugs Generally speaking the filter in British journalism is pretty poor.
You can see articles like these all the time. Basically a chain of click baits. -
@afewbugs It's actually flat out impossible to make a million in an average lifetime at minimum wage even if you have zero expenses (free rent, free food). At minimum wage in the US it would take 66 years, pre-tax, putting you well above the life expectancy of 79 years to 84.
@afewbugs Also fun numbers, to make that much in savings from "making lunch" they would have had to be spending just under $200/day on lunch to save that much in that short amount of time.

@SquirrelwithaninvisibleW @nusher @afewbugs This is a good point that's almost certainly being deliberately glossed over. I consider myself reasonably well paid, but I'd need over 30 years of saving my entire take-home pay before I'd have a million in savings. It sure ain't the packed lunches that made the difference!
