@psneeze I saw this literally as the clock hit 5 minutes to midnight so I better take it literally. I just need my server administrator to put up the test card and then I'll be off to the leaba.

A Fediverse bot that posts a GIF at 10 minutes to midnight of your server administrator saying "Time now, everybody - last toots at the bar." At 5 minutes to midnight, Eugen flashes the lights. At midnight, Mastodon plays your national anthem. You stand. You finish singing the last line with a little cheer and go to bed. Your home timeline transmits the Test Card. The Fediverse will resume transmission at 0600 hours. Even the reply guys will come back well-rested.
@CiaraNi with all the talk about closing access to Facebook and Instagram at night we could actually be super compliant by just shutting down the servers at midnight. "Look Mrs. Von Der Leyen, our social network already protects it's user's right to sleep."

@tehstu They're all references from my own memories. You, me and many in the Fediverse are old enough to remember them, it seems. There were varying sounds and styles, depending on country, but we have common memories of end of transmission on the telly or transistor, closing time at the pub, the end of the play, etc.

@ryan I was thinking of some magic Fediverse bot that tells you to log off and go to bed at your own personal midnight, when the clock strikes midnight wherever you personally are tooting from. But I like your idea better. I like the thought of the Fediverse telling mutuals in Nepal, in New Zealand, in Alaska, in Japan, in Nigeria, to go to bed at my Danish midnight, regardless of what time it is for them. 'WELL. RESTED.' Yes

@Devils_Rancher That's an oddly busy noisy activity-orientated choice of performance for a time-to-go-to-bed End of Transmission message. It's like the opposite of soothing sleepy whale song.

@Devils_Rancher @adamrice Most national anthems benefit from not being sung in their entirety. The US national anthem does seem to get sung rather a lot compared to many other countries, where you'd mostly only hear it at sports events where a national team or sportsperson is officially representing the country in an international competition.

@ryan That has never struck me, that time-specific events like the Times Square New Year's countdown aren't broadcast at staggered intervals according to the different time zones in the same country, but live, and thus at the wrong time for many.

@ryan Remote and international work does bring its own time-zone challenges. I'm reminded now of people travelling in the 80s and 90s, when you couldn't just look it up, trying to remember the time difference so that they didn't wake their parents at 3 am when they made that expensive, rare telephone-box phone call home.

@CiaraNi Only if there is a corresponding instance for night shift workers that goes ota between 0900-1500.
Otherwise it's just more day shift privilege.
