@FranceskaMann @EndlessMason @quixoticgeek this sadly does not depend on appliance smartness. It is just matching the appliance in the picture with photos from airbnb dot com

"Oh"@quixoticgeek Well, I work in a hospital when the fridge has an error it notifies the technical people. These fridges have some kind of network.

@Brett @quixoticgeek as an American, our version has a gun by the printer—my elaboration on that is that the gun is of a traditional hammer-fired persuasion, has an explicit safety and whose design has been materially unchanged for decades.

This is why I do not care that AI causes big big problems and keeps escaping.
Let it happen, let people start wondering if they need all this shit.
Fridges that tell you it is time to do the groceries ? > use your brain
Cars connected with the whole world (including Trump, Putin and Musk)? > we don’t need that
Etc etc etc

"Oh"@quixoticgeek In my opinion, we've gotten to a point where (generally speaking, there are exceptions like kitchenaid mixers) the consumer appliance industry has gotten to a point where spending more gets you a worse product. Spending more doesn't buy you a higher quality product, it buys you more complexity and more gimmicks that just break or it buys you wifi connectivity that they use to lock basic features behind subscriptions.

@quixoticgeek I've always had "landlord spec" appliances. By that I mean if you look it up, it's the cheapest or close to the cheapest and most basic model that (insert brand, whirlpool in my current case) makes. Yet my fridge keeps my food cold. My oven heats to the temperature I told it to. My washing machine makes my clothes clean. My dishwasher cleans my dishes fantastically well. And none of them demand anything of me.

@quixoticgeek Can I tell they are cheaper appliances and are there features I wish I had? Sure. My oven has no convect mode. The dishwasher and clothes washer are noisy. My fridge has no water or ice dispenser (though it does have an icemaker). But they all do the job they are designed to do very well. And I expect them to hold up decently because there's so little to go wrong, and if something does go wrong it will be cheaper to fix.

@quixoticgeek The $2500 fancy oven with wifi and whatever else is not going to do a better job at being an oven than my $700 oven. Same with pretty much any other appliance. And the $700 one isn't gonna demand subscriptions and it will probably last much longer. So why would you buy the more expensive one.

"Oh"@quixoticgeek This is where they go silent because they know the response to this would piss you off.
"Actually, we need to make sure your repair man can't hack into the firmware to fix stuff. If he could you could use him and not our overpriced repair people who are 'licensed' and pay us for the right to the keys. How we gonna sell the keys if someone figures out how to break in and it's not on the internet pulling updates when we plug those holes??"

@quixoticgeek Then what happens is some "software engineer" decides that he doesn't give a shit and just does the minimum thing that might get checked off as having completed the feature.
So you get XOR against "password" to protect privacy in BCI software, which is an actual thing I saw happen.
"R.1.1.23: protect root"
Developer: "set root password to 'opensesme' - NEXT!!"

"Oh"@quixoticgeek I want my fridge and washing machine to last 30 years without needing expensive repairs. Adding complexity so the advertisement can have a long bullet list of useless features doesn’t serve my needs.
