I don’t think this is uplifting news. This is evidence that Californian municipal services have utterly failed. Many cities, like Oakland in particular, seem incapable of picking up the trash or curbing dumping.

@skinnylatte It has a similar vibe to the “uplifting” stories of some elementary school kid raising money to pay off the school lunch debt of his fellow students. Someone organized to address a failing of the system, but rather than take a harder look at the failing system, we’re just supposed to applaud the person who temporarily alleviated the issue.

@mwyman @skinnylatte I agree but also wonder if there's some value for this particular case in celebrating the people power; maybe leaning into this sense of community self-sufficiency despite/in spite of state?

@thiswomanswerk @skinnylatte oh, definitely not trying to knock the efforts of the people themselves. Hopefully the community they have engaged can collectively push for more systemic changes.

@skinnylatte this is how I feel about every "feel-good" story about a kid selling lemonade or workers donating their PTO. These are absolute systemic failures, being whitewashed by those responsible.

@skinnylatte Here in San Francisco, instead of increasing garbage pickups, they removed the corner garbage cans. They had been fully functional, and not too ugly, and needed to be emptied more frequently. So they removed them. Ugh!

@skinnylatte For whatever it’s worth (and I think your actual point is a valid one), there is a lot of cleaning happening over the past 2 weeks along my Mandela Parkway bike commute route. Don’t know the reason/project behind the sudden change, but it’s pretty dramatic.

But yeah, the phenomenon of grandmas and their friends cleaning up the outdoors after everyone is - um - sweeping the nation. And it is for the reasons you wrote. 🤦‍♂️

@kristinHenry @skinnylatte maybe if we got more than one bulk pickup per year from our monopolist private trash collector, people wouldn’t dump things on the street as much. it’s wild to me what we’ve handed Recology. There are a lot of dumb things about San Francisco, but its legislatively protected trash collection is near the top.

@eniatitova @skinnylatte My memory, which could be wrong, is that when Gavin Newsom was mayor, he responded to the need for more public garbage pickups by removing public garbage cans.

@skinnylatte I think it shows that people in general failed. Why the heck do people throw away trash wherever anyway? I've always been taught to bring trash to the nearest dumpster/trash can and dispose of it there. It's not like it's a very heavy burden...

@eniatitova @skinnylatte I haven't studied San Francisco trash pickups. But I do know it could be worse.

I was once hired to visualize the chaotic system of commercial (non-residential) trash pick up in New York City.

@kristinHenry yes but residential trash pickups in New York City left me blissfully unaware of its complexities. Garbage got picked up, I could put anything out on the curb, and it was a city service provided by unionized employees. There was no garbage collection fee. In SF, I’m constantly being told by that if we don’t fold our cardboard just right, or if the trash is “too big,” Recology will get mad and won’t pick it up anything. Are they aware they’re paid to collect literal garbage? I’ve seen our building’s bill: it’s nearly $1,000 a month for 7 units.

I mean, pretty much all of California tax policy is built to keep cities like Oakland in a perpetual budget crisis. And the two flavors of solution for this problem--ramp up enforcement or commit to constant cleanups--involve a lot of staffing up.

It doesn't help that building contractors and apartment cleaning service across the east bay bring their trash here instead of paying landfill fees.

@earthlightning I understand why it’s the way it is. It’s just bizarre. I’ve never had to think about the trash anywhere else I’ve lived. It just works, usually. Then in SF the horrible trash monopoly that we pay a ton of money to, also doesn’t seem to remember it’s their job to pick up the trash. Public services are so utterly broken.

I don’t think this is uplifting news. This is evidence that Californian municipal services have utterly failed. Many cities, like Oakland in particular, seem incapable of picking up the trash or curbing dumping.

@skinnylatte It is also a sad reflection on the fact people dropping the litter can be bothered to keep their local environment clean.

@eniatitova @skinnylatte My memory, which could be wrong, is that when Gavin Newsom was mayor, he responded to the need for more public garbage pickups by removing public garbage cans.
