@folfdk @simonjust I also need to change away from FF.

I was trying to figure out Waterfox, but it's very secretive about its governance and community. It seems to be run by mostly just 1 person who's active on Hackernews and LinkedIn. Which might be fine for a small software library, but a bit questionable for a full browser.

LibreWolf is in start contrast to that, looks much more like a flourishing community.

That's a good point Benjamin, I was looking for Android alternatives and librewolf is only desktop so far if I understand correctly?

@simonjust I have been testing Falkon https://falkon.org recently—it is usable, but not without problems. I miss some of the plugins that were available in FF. After playing videos, I often find that the CPU load maxes out for several seconds and the machine is unresponsive (it's a small laptop with limited resources). I find that it crashes more often than FF, but not so often that it's impossible to use.

@simonjust @saustrup Yes, I have the same impression. It feels lighter on a labtop with limited resources like mine. However, I'm not sure if that's just because it's Qt-based and I'm running KDE anyway, so maybe they share some resources.

@MrManor @saustrup Could be the culprit, yes, some of the KDE libraries are perhaps already loaded into RAM, when your OS boots.

I'm on GNOME and opted for the flatpak, so it needs to load up the whole bunch 😀

Librewolf it not based on qt or kde, it is same ui library as firefox. It may be faster because they removed/disabled some of the bloat.

I use librewolf too, on kde, and zenbrowser, which is another great firefox based browser 🙂

@simonjust @reynir @folfdk I think what happened with the last round of IceWeasel was that Mozilla was unhappy with some patches Debian did. In effect it means that every time someone changes Firefox in a way that Mozilla doesn't agree with, they are not allowed to call it Firefox anymore.

»In 2006, Mozilla withdrew their permission for Debian to use the Firefox name due to significant changes to the browser that Mozilla deemed outside the boundaries of its policy« - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_IceCat

@benjaoming @reynir @folfdk That's right. I think that is alright, because you're not getting the full "Firefox experience" (for better or worse) and projects can deviate into their own separate thing.
