I'm trying to provide unofficial direct tech support for using this place.
There is no such thing as a silly question, especially keen to help new or non-technical people who want answers in plain language.
If you prefer not to ask, you can find lots of help on the website at https://fedi.tips
@FediTips I just like to say that you do wonderful work

@FediTips Mind a question? How much money do someone need to maintain a fediverse server? Let's say only Mastodon and Diaspora, as the latter is having fewer servers. Would a VPS work? or do you need a full machine?

It's about 5 to 10 euros or US dollars per month for the smallest server through managed hosting, where they do all the techy stuff for you. For example https://fedihost.co/pricing and https://masto.host/pricing have price lists.
If you're using a VPS or a home server you could possibly do it more cheaply but you would need to do a lot more work.
I don't know about Diaspora, especially as its development seems to be minimal nowadays
(Diaspora hasn't had a new release since 2024) -

Yeah, it's cheaper than people realise. Moderation is the biggest task, definitely.
In case this is useful, I've done a beginner's guide to starting a Mastodon server at https://growyourown.services/making-your-own-mastodon-server-in-10-steps

Is it possible to host an instance for a single account or few accounts, and make it discoverable through the wider fediverse?

Yes, that's what I do
Lots of people have single user instances. If anyone follows you, your posts become visible to their entire server. So, once you've got a few followers from different servers, your posts will show up on all those different servers.
There's more tips for discoverability at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-get-more-followers-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse and more tips for people running a small server at https://fedi.tips/using-relays-to-quickly-expand-a-servers-view-of-the-fediverse

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services wondering if you know anything about Akkoma’s automatic post deletion behavior. Easy enough to find how to set it up, but unlike Mastodon I don’t see any means of telling Akkoma which posts not to delete. Is that just not possible on Akkoma? Post deletion applies to all posts, regardless if pinned or bookmarked?

As far as I can tell Akkoma lacks this feature, there is a request for it at https://akkoma.dev/AkkomaGang/akkoma/issues/447
