This one will hurt: I love 1Password as a product.

This one will hurt: I love 1Password as a product. But I'm the son of a concentration camp survivor. I will not give money to companies that align themselves with nationalism, and certainly not ethnic cleansing. Completely disappointing, @1password. https://www.flyingpenguin.com/dhh-nazism-funded-by-1password-vp-who-wrote-honest-security/
@ben never beholden yourself to just one company. always have a backup in the wind, just in case.
-
@ben Oof, I missed that.
I guess I'm dreading trying to explain to my wife that we may need to change password managers because of these twisted relationships and wondering if maybe I'm being overly reactionary.
For example, I have a Framework laptop and they've supported Omarchy in the past. But would switching to Lenovo or Dell really be any better? What's the harm I'm trying to address?
-
@ben I'm bringing this up because I've found you to be a deeply thoughtful person and it's something I've been struggling with...
There has to be a difference between a 1Password, whose crime is funding a project that is led by someone with hateful views and a Palantir, whose entire business is to empower authoritarianism, right?
I feel like we need a #FashTech tier list.
-
@Downes @ben @1password same, i might actually write my own one..
@Downes @ben @1password got thinking about the fun stuff like the security and authentication model, and possibly a plausible-deniability-duress feature. But i realise the least appealing bit will be writing browser interoperability

@ben @1password it’s going to take me some time because I have an entire family to move, but it’s not a question of if it’s only a matter of when I get everyone off 1Password.

@ben @1password this piece is solid. It is missing what I think was the most outrageous post, with the explicit call to action at the end:

@stanley @ben Well, if you're just looking for some other open hardware to try, MNT has a new Pocket Reform coming out that looks sweet, and they're a lot stronger on actually releasing specifications than Framework ever was https://shop.mntre.com/products/mnt-pocket-reform

@ben @1password @thomasfuchs Our business adopted both 1Password and Basecamp when those products were new. Canceled Basecamp after DHH bullshit London post, canceling 1Password today.

@stanley @ben I guess the main way I would frame it is that "While Palantir makes fascism their mission statement, 1Password is not making fascism *their* mission statement - their mission statement is more about making money that they're putting towards someone else who *is* making fascism their mission statement.".
The indirection feels like they know they can't be Palantir, but they could fund Palantir with a smokescreen.
-
@reinier @stanley @ben cool if so, but there was never any denouncement (that i saw?), only a pathetic defense of their "big tent" approach to donations, which is always bullshit

@ben@werd.social @1password I bought a version 7 license and never bought the subscription and I'm glad I didn't. I've been working to divest from subscription-based things for some time now. Every product that claims to provide "convenience" these days deserves a good look under the microscope. 1pw big thing is password sync? That's a minor inconvenience I'm willing to shoulder myself.
@ben@social.benjaminturner.me @ben@werd.social @1password yep, that's when I ducked out too. It was very clear where the company was going when they said that an in-browser subscription service was more secure than a local one. You cannot be both sane and have your users' best interests in mind while claiming that, so one or both must be false.
(*Offering* that is fine, many people prefer it. Claiming it's more secure, or better for your users, is not.)And then the headcount at the company exploded. Another not-so-subtle hint about their goals.
1Password has not been customer-friendly for a very long time. They don't deserve your money, leave now rather than wait until they start impacting you personally.

"Trump Says He's a 'Nationalist'" - The New York Times
All those supporters are also nationalist'.
"'I am a nationalist,' Trump proclaims at Houston rally"
"New York Times' Proof that Trump Is Now a Fascist "
Noted; NYT is a co-conspirator to fascism or state press.
Won't hear them do a story on how billionaire fascist overthrew the USA. -

@ben as far as the _mechanics_ of vaults, I’ve gone to BitWarden, and on iOS, Linux browsers, windows browsers, and Mac browsers, the plugins exist to make password mgmt pretty transparent. Easily installed, too.

@stanley @ben this isn't just a project led by someone with hateful views. the entire point of the omarchy "foundation" is to fund fashtech and fascists in tech, to create a parallel industry and power structure that is explicitly fascist. this is a seed accelerator for the next palantir, and 1password just signed up to fund fascist startups for years

I moved from @1password to @bitwarden and it didn't hurt a bit. Now Bitwarden is funding a right wing political party, I'm looking forward to moving to @aliasvault . I love that it provides email aliases as well!
