When I saw clips of mobs of youngsters running rampant through public and non-public spaces with cellphones held out in front of them recording as they went, my initial thought was some kind of ulterior 'mapping' was going on. Like, this is how they're augmenting Google Maps and "Street View" with data they can't capture from vans driving around public streets.

After all, the concept of #PokémonGo originated from the Google Maps: Pokémon Challenge, an April Fools' Day project released by Google Maps on April 1, 2014, that was created by Google engineer Tatsuo Nomura.

But it didn't occur to me until now, of course this dataset would be something quite valuable for the police and military to co-opt.

@SheDrivesMobility We're making games for kids into murderbots. We're like a cosmic horror species.

@boksy This was the original point of Ingress (Niantic's first game). They never charged anyone a penny for it while they were part of Google, and it was well known that you were "paying" for the game by collecting data for Google Maps as you played.

@SheDrivesMobility Will the drones have nanobots in them, to scan our caves because we can't breathe our atmosphere?

@SheDrivesMobility Military drones with information about civilian places, that's where they're going to be used.

@SheDrivesMobility (takes long draw on cigarette) I remember when the Ingress players were upset to discover their data was being used as the basis for Pokémon Go.
