This memorial keeps coming to mind as I watch the US become openly fascist. This broken person sits among the ruins of St. Nikolai church in Hamburg, bombed by the Allies in 1943. When I first saw it, it struck me that this helpless, hopeless, despairing figure could be either kind of German who survived - a victim, unable to comprehend what was done to them, or a perpetrator, unable to comprehend what they did to others.
