Two pieces of computing history just met.

Commodore is returning to phones, and it chose Jolla's Sailfish OS to do it. The Commodore Callback 8020 is a flip phone built for stepping away from the feed: privacy designed in, your data kept yours.

@jolla@techhub.social I would have preferred proper qwerty keyboard. But using the only European mobile OS is a plus.

@jolla Not sure about the blocking web browser and social media part, just let the user do whatever they want. I have no problem with that as the default setting, just let the user unlock it later on. Do not act like the parent of the user.

@CarlosARM @jolla yeah, but would probably not cost more than the commodore phone itself. And if people remember commodore than they surely will remember the Amiga.

@jolla@techhub.social @AnimeAndVisial@mastodon.social They allow "sideloading" of APKs, actually, which run in some sort of Android-compatible container. I hope you're right, though Peri Fractic's article on the Callback seems to suggest it is actually locked-down.
Hopefully it'll be "rootable", so there's at least some way for the user to exercise control. That's just fundamental.

@raketti If you don't have a big data pool to sell for advertisement (respecting privacy), you need to get paid for your product itself.

It's up to you, what you're willing to pay with: Money or personal data.

@AnimeAndVisial @jolla I was thinking the same thing about the "no email" thing, like, I can understand the need to disconnect from work, but email is not a big time consumer, least not for me. Flip side, if I do need to check an email (and people other than my work or advertisers do email me, my roommates frequently send me emails), that means I'll have to get back home to my computer

@jolla Not sure I like their marketing, but I like light phones. Any idea how much is this supposed to weight? (And is it real? I have not seen antennas on cellphones for a while...)

@jolla I hope you retained control of OS updates. KaiOS made that mistake. Among others. Their non inconsiderable number of devices slid into obscurity also because carriers refused to update the bug ridden, security compromised KaiOS 2 and 3.

@jolla I tipped GsmArena for this and they gave it some coverge, in their usual half-nonchalant way... https://m.gsmarena.com/commodore_announces_callback_8020_the_mobile_phone_between_dumb_and_smart-news-73304.php

@jolla I'm trying to be positive about it but saying privacy was designed in while also preinstalling WhatsApp suggests you don't really understand privacy.
