@benroyce I've been noticing an uptick of "So you really think you can vote yourself out of this?" posts on Mastodon. It wasn't from a bot account but the cynicism is really starting to ramp up from the "burn it all to the ground" quarter.
My response to that is something along the lines of, "Uh, no? I don't? Now go vote, asshole." -

@benroyce @PeterBlok @DeanFarrell it's funny that "anyone who isn't actively driving us off a cliff" was so much more accurate than we even could have imagined

they press learned helpnessness to make us not vote
and not voting, as much as fascism, gives us all of our shit (in the usa at least)

@benroyce @axolotl Tell that shit to my father's generation. He was in WWII on the Pacific Front, and came back to bring me and my siblings into this world while some of the Nazi and Japanese war criminals were hanged.
I know I am much older than the current crop of younger activists but I still say if they can defeat fascism, so can we.
@LukefromDC @benroyce @axolotl My f-i-l's generation was willing to cross oceans, aim guns at fascists, and squeeze the triggers. It took them years to get to that point, but they got there.
I hope we get there too before it's too late.

“You can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube.”
“Why not? Somebody put it in there in the first place.”
They were voted in; until proven otherwise, they can be voted out.

and some of them are popular accounts
there are accounts with thousands of followers on the fediverse doing the "but the democrats aren't perfect, waah" and "everything the same, nothing changes, waah" loser bullshit

@benroyce A good idea is to see who your candidates are, look at what they represent, then ignore the news. If you have specific questions, contact them.
It should be offensive that folk who spend the most in PR are considered most in chance of winning.

I've always regarded the phrase as meaning something is difficult rather than a literal statement that something is impossible.
