Amsterdam murder rate: extremely low

@jerrej um, okay, sure, whatever you say, internet stranger.
-
@jmopp @0xabad1dea why oh why is there no railing
@navi @jmopp @0xabad1dea Same reason you don't have railing on public streets. People want to park their boats and get out.

Amsterdam murder rate: extremely low
Amsterdam drunk man attempts to relieve himself into canal, falls in, hits his head and drowns rate: extremely high
Plan your tourism accordingly.
This is not a joke, this is literally true. Amsterdam is probably the only place that has ever built more public toilets with the specific aim of reducing deaths by drowning.
@0xabad1dea Is it possible the assassins’ guild of Amsterdam has figured out how to avoid investigation by hitting the target over the head, unzipping his fly, and tossing him in the canal?

@0xabad1dea
I am a very moderate drinker, for years.
But when leaving London years ago , having a goodbye-drink with my young Irish colleague who went back for study, I needed all sides of Trafalgar Square to cross it.
Fortunately there are no canals at Trafalgar Square.
( I had to make it to Woodgreen. No memories about that ) -
@0xabad1dea I guess this particular way to go for ever is mostly chosen by men. 🫣
An equal world is possible!

Everybody can drown in the canal!

@navi @jmopp the canals are, historically speaking, the streets. It's harder to use them that way these days because of all the tour boats, but they are completely public and meant to be used.
Probably there should be a few more railings, but keep in mind, most of them are quite shallow and hard to drown in, and during the day you WILL be spotted if you fall in. It's very specifically drunk men dicking around at 2 am who are most of the fatalities.
@0xabad1dea
by *airquote*pure chance*airquote* that's also the cohort that's most likely to try to climb over a railing or fence at 2am.

@Pouakai @0xabad1dea
Only (to oversimplify it) if they have not already reproduced. -
@Pouakai You are right.
Thank you, I was thinking that as I wrote it but couldn't decide how specific to be. I have added qualifying text in brackets. -

@0xabad1dea I am genuinely curious about the "random foreigner tries to cross the street over uneven wet cobblestones, narrowly avoids a speeding bicycle, runs scared to avoid an incoming tram, slips on an slippery tramway rail and gets crushed by an Uber making a U-turn" rate.

@0xabad1dea thank God I don't drink alcohol xD. I remember seeing policemen all the time in the red light district, very safe
-
@0xabad1dea we have our own version of this in Spain, it's drunk brits and germans falling to their doom off of balconies, trying to land in the pool (aka balconing). We do have a leaderboard, tho!
https://www.balcon.ing/@Alonely0 @0xabad1dea What, Colombia leading the scoreboard this year? no brits or germans??

@0xabad1dea This might not be a joke, but it is pretty funny anyway. I wish more American cities were this funny.

@0xabad1dea
This correlates pretty well with my observations while visiting:"This is a party city? It must be one of the least comforting places to be chemically-impaired that I've ever willingly gone."
Lovely city, mind you! Just not somewhere that I'd want to be buzzed.

@0xabad1dea @navi At some point I would love to try kayaking to the office. Or at least as far as I can before I run into actual marine traffic
@jmopp @0xabad1dea @navi When I lived there I took rowing lessons at a public outfit at the Berlagebrug, I presume they’re still going. In winter with the short daylight hours you end up rowing through the canals at night, it’s utterly magical.

@ada It's low even by the standards of civilized countries.
But also, I'm American.
