    Stop saying stupid stuff like:
"If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear."

    Start saying:
"A free country doesn't track innocent citizens."

@Tutanota The best response to this I have heard comes from Finch in Person of Interest.

"People who say that they have nothing to hide, usually do."

@Tutanota I just ask them what color their underwear is. And to prove it.

        Makes the point quickly.

@Tutanota Nice words about privacy, but the actual practice tells a different story. You market yourselves as the ethical alternative to Google, criticizing how it disrespects user privacy. So how am I supposed to understand that when I use a VPN to protect my identity, you block me from creating an account? I get that this might be to prevent fraud, but the result is that you're tying my account to my real location from the very first moment.

@Tutanota The issue isn't that you're making a security tradeoff it's that you talk about privacy as if it's absolute, without being upfront about exceptions like this one. If your privacy has limits, say so honestly, instead of marketing it as if it's complete.

@Tutanota Just because you did nothing wrong, doesn't mean an evil regime won't persecute for it.

@Tutanota the problem with this rhetoric is that implies that it is only bad when governments do it (it's the libertarian idea that "only the government can do violence").

Of course, I want authorities to be able to stop bad actors, but I also want big tech out of my coms.

This type of balance is hard to find, as it seems it must be all or nothing. Phone calls can be tapped with a judge order, it should be the same for electronic coms. But the phone company doesn't listen to my calls.
