Mary Shelley is getting spayed tomorrow! And then hopefully we’ll find her a home soon. She was an amazing mamacat, but now her kittens are all adopted and she’s ready to retire. (And by the time the kittens left, she really *was* ready to retire. 😅) I don’t know how many litters she had when she was living on the street, but I’m glad she was able to have one where everybody was healthy and cared for and safe and loved.

Mary Shelley has been spayed! And I’m struck once again by the fundamental feminism behind cat rescue, which is often about this kind of reproductive health. Nature designed cats to be reproductive powerhouses in a way that’s not needed with human care — they don’t need to have so many kittens in an environment where the vast majority of them survive. And she’s meeting a potential new family next weekend!🤞

@trixter Spayed cats also have less risk of cancers, so there's that.

@madcollector Yes! Getting rid of those huge hormonal surges helps their overall heath.

Even experienced fosters get things wrong sometimes. 😅 So re-meet Branwell Brontë, formerly Anne!

@trixter Even vets get things wrong sometimes! Two years ago I brought home cats that had belonged to a deceased friend. I took them to my vet, and he said, "This cat is a neutered male." Simone had had regular vet checkups for 9 years...and not one vet had noticed that she was actually he.

The way they shaved Mary Shelley for her spay makes it look like she’s got a too-short crop top on. 😂

@LPerry2 @trixter Some years ago our vet asked us if we could take a blind cat, about 4 months old, which had been taken to her office after an accident and needed a home. A nice girl, Julia ... the vet was astonished when we came back with our baby for spaying and had to explain to her that there were little balls ...
