If you see a reply in your timeline, you can see the discussion thread it comes from by just clicking on the reply.

@FediTips This works, except when it doesn't. Then you have to scroll down to the "replies from other servers may be missing/see more replies on [OP host]" link at the bottom of the thread.
I am not sure anyone fully understands why this is so.

It's because servers only show posts and replies that have federated to them. However, Mastodon is currently testing an update which would fetch all replies in a thread even if they haven't federated yet.
