Four years have passed since Russia's full scale invasion of Ukraine. Russia was supposed to win in three days. Instead, Ukraine reinvented modern warfare, built a drone industry, and can destroy a thousand Russian soldiers in a day. Ukraine can win.

Ukraine must win. EU must not allow them to lose.

"Russia was supposed to win in three days."

I recently encountered someone who claims the three-day estimate was Western propaganda and Russia never said it would be that fast. I tried to explain that came from Russian state-owned TV stations, but they were not convinced.

@anneapplebaum Many people might say: "But how can Ukraine free all the occupied territory. They don't have the military to do that."
For that we need to find an example in history, e.g. WWI. At the end of WWI, Russia had surrendered, none of the central powers territory was occupied, all the fighting took place on allied territory, and the front didn't move for months. And yet nobody can argue that the Germany won the WWI. So I think it's very possible for Ukraine to win this war.

@anneapplebaum Even if they don't manage to free all their territory. When Russia is collapsing, they need to give everything back they took and pay restoration for all they've damaged. The only thing that we should keep in mind is, to not make the same mistakes that were done after WWI.

Destroying the invader's resources is how you make the invader lose even if they gain territory. Destroying the resources of the country you're trying to invade is how you don't win anything even if you gain territory. It's not a symmetrical situation.

@anneapplebaum Wow, didn’t know it was 3 days. Why is it that humans are distributed around world, yet wars aren’t equally? I see Ukraine war as direct result of WW2, and that WW1. It is sat-an-ic. May God help Russians & Ukrainians sow seeds of peace and reap the harvest. #Resistimosalaguerra #WeResistWar

@anneapplebaum look I hope you’re right but I just doubt it. Russia has the manpower to do what they’re doing for the next 20 years, Ukraine doesn’t. And yes drones were huge at first but now Russia has them too, and they still have the numbers advantage.

War depends almost entirely on logistics and manpower, two of Russia’s big advantages.

For Ukraine to win Russia needs to be defeated on their home turf.

@helmort @anneapplebaum China joining seems unlikely. The only war China had ever fought is civil war and defensive war. There’s no precedent for them to join a war in Europe AFAIK.

And so far we haven’t even seen Chinese drones in Ukraine have we? Even though they surely have more advanced drone technology than Iran, given that their a leader at least in civilian drone manufacturing.

@anneapplebaum Not gonna happen as long as our weak and embarassing EU "leaders" just sit there and wag their chins and throw some money on the problem.

The EU needs to join the war, fast, and make sure russia is humiliated, and then have them go through the historically proven method of Nürnberg trials.

The russian people must feel the shame, hard enough, and long enough, so that they will never repeat this mistake.

If russia is allowed to benefit, just like in ww2 times, they'll be at it again in 10 years time or so.

That our politicians does not understand this truly shows the weakness of modern western democracy and the EU as a whole.
