We've been working diligently to get #FDroid Client ready for release.
If naming our releases 'alpha' or 'rc' impeded you to update, now you are free to install.
As usual we are exercising this as a stage roll-out, so you can now expand Versions and install 2.0.
If it's the first time, or even the n-th time, you've heard about our new client work, you can read all the gritty details in the 15 mins post: https://f-droid.org/2026/09/24/f-droid-2.0-a-new-chapter-for-android-freedom.html
To everyone involved in delivering 2.0, a sincere "Thank You!"
Tremendous milestone and another win for freedom, congratulations! Works also great on Jolla Phone / SailfishOS

@fdroidorg I noticed F-Droid 2.0 has a "most downloaded" section. Which is great, but where does this info come from? Is it compatible with the publicly available #IzzyOnDroid download statistic standard (https://codeberg.org/IzzyOnDroid/iod-stats-builder) so users who use multiple repositories can have proper combined statistics for the most reliable and complete image of what is popular? I remember actively reaching out about this but not getting any response, would be a shame if this was done in an incompatible way

I have updated to the latest version. It looks very nice.
I am missing the "Permissions" section of an app's page. Is it really removed, or will it be added back gradually in a future release?
Thanks for the great work

It is just a JSON array shipping with the client. Data comes from https://grote.gitlab.io/fdroid-metrics-distilled/

@fdroidorg@grote @fdroidorg Ouch, so it's incompatible with the IzzyOnDroid standard and it'll be outdated in the F-Droid client all the time because you can only update it with new releases

Well, at least it's *something* for discoverability.
Anyway, thanks for the link

Yes it was a hard political compromise. The minimal thing we could do really. I had explored more options in
https://gitlab.com/fdroid/wiki/-/wikis/Featured-AppsThe list of apps is based on download numbers of the past year, so it doesn't change all that quickly.
Having numbers that include mirrors would be great to have.

@fdroidorg@grote That's what our framework offers – which we offered and outlined at FOSDEM last year, but have been rejected (not by you of course)

@fdroidorg imagine my sursprise when the app I wanted to install (e1547) was banned by f-droid and is only available on the playstore and github (because it could potentially browse sites with adult content?!) meanwhile you have nitter apps that can browse X (twitter) which has an AI bot for undressing people
f-droid is not an alternative, it's even more restricted than the fucking play store and if anyone has a real alternative I'd love to hear about it
@pawty@mastodon.social although with those restrictions, you can instead migrate to another repository and still receive updates as you wish. bummer that f-droid did remove e1547 for not-so-clear reasons (and i do ask @fdroidorg@floss.social for clarifications) but you can just, not have to use f-droid and instead use another repository, and still have the same experience. f-droid's repository has a pretty low tolerance when it comes to the applications that are published (which gives me confidence that i wont be installing malware, unlike google malware store), but you can pick any option with higher tolerances or different policies for app publishing!
even if you consider f-droid an not alternative to (what i presume is) google play, you still can take its fruits and appreciate that you still have options -

@fdroidorg can I not set the interval to check for updates or force an update check on my own anymore?

@fdroidorg Good work! For the next release I'm hoping for, from best to less good:
1. GenAI ban in apps
2. GenAI filtering (anti feature) in apps, default enabled
3. GenAI filtering (anti feature) in apps, prompt for setting on first launch/update
