After their informative, witty and insightful conversation on stage, audience questions were invited. A middle-aged man asked the author: ”In future, would you not use AI language machines to translate your books instead?"

I take heart from the fact that a negative reaction instantly flew through the room. People gasped. One man literally booed. Many groaned and mumbled. One person may or may not have said OhForFucksSake aloud. That person may or may not have been me.

The man in the audience who attended a literary festival but doesn’t value human translation at least noticed the negative reaction when he advised an author to use AI instead of a professional human translator.

He said testily, as if addressing dim-witted children: "I mean a Language Learning machine. I’m not talking about Google Translate."

That struck me as a typical TechBro Reply Guy attitude. He assumes people object to generative AI because they don’t understand it, not because they do.

@Pepijn I did actually wonder if it was even necessary to specify 'middle-aged man' there.

@CiaraNi I have seen/witnessed this, too. Given my background in physics I usually approach these people from the mathematical side of LLMs to see if they have something useful to say. Sadly they have not. Saves me a lot of pointless discussions.

@CiaraNi Besides, didn't it spread on the Fediverse that Google Translate is literally an LLM frontend now?

@llanciawn That was indeed his answer, just packed in a little in diplomatic cotton wool. He handled it well, there on stage at an event. As did the translator - also his wife, also the interviewer - sitting there beside him. Fair play to her, she didn't even twitch.

@Krazov @HaTetsu I think it's fine that there was just an instant, visceral Nope! response from a room of mixed people with mixed knowledge of AI, GAI, language-learning machines etc. In that context, I don't think the nuances help, people would just get bogged down in them and it would derail the collective emotional message of 'no AI, we value human translators'.
