For some reason, I hate the adjective "novel". Replacing with "new" all over. I guess I just find it pretentious.

I kind of like the word until I think of it in the context of research grant applications. Then it makes me slightly nauseous.

I believe it's probably the smell of BS that gets to me.

Same, but worse, with "excellence".
