@maya_b @cliffle They think that if they show Canada "Lake Ontario" they will be OK, ignoring that Trump's approval rating is down to 30% and most Americans will think they are pathetic wimps for going along with this. New York State and the city of Rochester have officially rejected the change, so no one bordering the lake wants this shit.

...and yet their compliance with laws regarding labor rights, collective bargaining, sexual harrassment, and workforce diversity was and is glacial, despite being actual laws.

@cliffle it is a choice, until corporations declare themselves nation states who don't have to abide by the government they operate in.

@cliffle Check how fast USGS NGIS altered the name. That's where Google gets the names from for maps displayed for US users.

@cliffle I got rid of Google Maps today. I believe this was the final nail in the coffin for my decades long year relationship with Google. Now to explore the options... 😊

@maya_b @cliffle I thought the name you see depended on your IP as I still see both the gulf and the lake using the old name and I assumed it was because I’m in Italy. Do Canadians (or Mexican in case of the gulf) see the Trump BS name? That would be some stupidity from Google.

@antopatriarca @maya_b @cliffle Germany sees "Lake Ontario (Lake America)". Not sure which other countries are affected how.

I presume it will be consistent with the Gulf of Mexico.

@j2kun @tknarr @cliffle Pretty sure the USGS NGIS does not say which name to show in Germany?

@divVerent @tknarr @cliffle The German government also runs a place name system (BKG). Does it choose a different name that Maps ignores? If so, that might be worth complaining about.

My point is really that people should first learn how the systems work before posting rants about them.

It's interesting that Google's compliance with non-law government directives regarding the names of bodies of water is so blazingly fast, because, they say, it's their responsibility under the law and they're just following orders...

...and yet their compliance with laws regarding labor rights, collective bargaining, sexual harrassment, and workforce diversity was and is glacial, despite being actual laws.
